Mrs. Reichert's Newsletter
Week of 9/19/2016
Language Workshop
This is the part of class where I read aloud to the students, model different comprehension strategies and lead discussions about the text. This week, our discussions will focus on character motivation, theme, inferences, observations, author's purpose, predictions, how characters respond to different challenges, parts of plot, and sequential retelling.
Spelling
The test over the words will be on Friday. Your child is more than welcome to practice their words on our spelling city site: spellingcity.com/this5th. They would click on the list number for the week and take tests or play games.
Group 1 (list 22): flake, mail, day, said, stage, brain, stay, have, tale, tail
Group 2 (list 49): row, owl, out, snow, growl, found, blown, shout, doubt, fowl
Group 3 (list 58): cows, boxes, buses, dishes, benches, glasses, mixes, chicks, farms, foxes
Group 4 (list 69): meter, secret, petal, rapid, punish, magic, paper, lazy, comet, major
Remember, spelling tests are only worth five points as each word is a half point.
Writing
We will move into personal narratives this week. The students will write about an unforgettable experience as they work with interjections, sentence length, sensory details, prepositions, and transition words.
Science
We will continue our study of daylight hours and seasons this week. The students will begin reviewing the information they have learned so far for a test that is coming up next week. Once it gets closer, I will let you know a date for the test.
Reading Workshop
I will continue to assess the students' reading through the use of DRA this week. The students have been given their STAR scores as well as their AR point goals for the marking period. I have discussed how to choose appropriate books and have been conferencing with students on their book choices. Please have your child read at home every night for at least 20 minutes.
Reminders
Picture day is this Thursday, the 22nd. There will be a spelling test next Friday. Friday is also popcorn day.
