Sanza
The Sanza
The Sanza also known as Mbira or the Thumb Piano is an African instrument that consists of a board ans metal tines. To play the Sanza you hold the board with both hands and pluck the tines with your thumbs. The tines on the Sanza were originally made out of Bamboo, but eventually made into metal. The Sanza was created twice. Once by an African and then built again by Hugh Tracey. Having the Sanza built again (in a different place) made it be spread across the world.
Balafon
The Balafon
The Balafon, also known as the Bala, is an instrument from Southern Africa. It is a kind of wooden xylophone. It plays melodic tunes and usually has 15-27 keys. It has been in Africa since the 1300's.
Development to other styles
- Jazz-I hear a xylophone in the jazz music. The xylophone has metal keys while its 'brother' ,the Balafon, has wooden keys.
- Blues-Blues music has simple drums in it. The drum is not the African kind of drum but the African drum is simple to play and has a simple sound.
- Rock n' roll-I hear a guitar. The guitar reminds me of the lute.
- Gospel- In gospel music people harmonize and the music is calm (but fun) just like African music. Also in Gospel music they tell a story the same with African music.
