DEARBORN STEM ACADEMY
PRINCIPAL NEWS AND NOTES, Vol. 1, No. 9
Week of October 29, 2018
Hi everyone!
We are looking forward to another exciting week at the Dearborn as we recap exciting events from the past weeks.
Looking forward...Wednesday, October 31st is "Halloween" and at the Dearborn we have put together some guidelines for students and families around costumes. Costumes will be allowed on Wednesday under the following guidelines:
1) No masks
2) No weapons
3) No revealing clothing
4) Costume choices are culturally appropriate
5) Costumes don't distract from learning in the classroom
If students are in violation of these rules they will be asked to change. Thank you for your cooperation.
STEM Week kicks off from the Dearborn STEM Academy
On Monday, October 22nd the Commonwealth of Massachusetts kicked off STEM Week at the Dearborn STEM Academy. Governor Baker and Lt. Governor Polito signed an official proclamation as our seniors looked on.
Our high school students and staff participated in displays and exhibitions and then listened to Governor Baker, Lt. Governor Polito, Congressman Kennedy, Interim Superintendent of Schools Laura Perille, and Vertex CEO Dr. Jeff Leiden speak about what it means to be in a STEM School in a STEM economy and living in this age of high technology. Our own student Francilliana Barbosa spoke and got to introduce the Governor. It was a great event. The Governor expressed that it was the first time he had used virtual reality headgear.

DETERMINED
Middle School Debate Team
Our middle school debate team is coached by Ms. Jennifer Goodman, teacher at the Dearborn STEM Academy. Four of our middle school students competed in the 1st DSA middle school debate tournament at Suffolk University last Saturday. The students debated against other area middle schools about immigration policy and work visas. Please congratulate our students on their effort and participation in the tournament! Our students' scores were competitive, especially for the first tournament!
ESL classes hear about how passions can inspire your work
The middle and high school ESL 3 classes invited several speakers from MIT this past week to talk about their passions in their work and outside of their work. Students prepared questions ahead of time and engaged in some great discussions about how one's passions can lead a person to creative and engaging careers. The speakers' passions ranged from studying new electrofuels for air travel, to participating in competitive jump-roping, to helping government and nongovernmental organizations design projects to improve the world in different ways. The ESL 3 students are now studying and will be interviewing experts in their own passion topics, including travel photography, careers in medicine, video game design, and many more.
Northeastern University students work with DSA teacher Marna Eckels and her students.
