Learner Profile Trait for February is
Reading Workshop & Language Workshop
Language Workshop and Reading Workshop continue to focus on the elements of mysteries in our “Investigation” unit. Students are currently finishing up with literature discussion groups or will be starting with a new group in the next week to support the learning in Language Workshop and Reading Workshop. In Language Workshop, we read a book called Roanoke, the Lost Colony. This book is a true mystery from history. After reading the book and exploring videos as well as other text about this mystery, students evaluated which theory would be the most plausible and supported it with text evidence. Students are also engaged in a two week figurative language unit. It is really fun to see how they are applying their learning in their own writing!
Writing Workshop
Writers are currently exploring different types of endings for their fictional stories that they are working on. We are looking at stories written by real authors to give us ideas for our endings. Students are enjoying this particular genre of writing as they are able to really be creative in their story plot!
Talking Points in ELA:
Tell about your fictional story
What is your theory about what happened to the people of Roanoke?
What book(s) are you reading for the Investigation unit?
Math Workshop
Mathematicians are taking a break from fractions and have begun working on a mini Algebra unit. We have started with comparisons (both additive and multiplicative), and have revisited how to multiply large numbers using either the area model or the partial products method. Next week will be a combination of multiplication and division within story problems as well as summative assessments in both multiplicative comparisons and multi-step story problems. Coming on the mathematics horizon is order of operations, which is very rule driven. Sharpen those Algebra memories as you support your student in this unit.
Talking Points regarding math:
If a comparison problem has the key words “more than”, is that an addition comparison or a multiplication comparison? (answer: addition)
If a comparison problem has the key words “times as many”, is that an addition comparison or a multiplication comparison? (answer: multiplication)
Science
Questions to ask your child in Science:
- What force put the ball into motion? What force brought the ball to stop?
- What would happen if two balls with the same momentum collide head on?
- What variables affect the momentum of an object?
