Lanoka Harbor School Newsletter
Dear Lanoka Families,
Our first two months of school have been very busy! Our PTO has been hard at work providing support in many ways. A sincere “thank you” to the volunteers who assisted with our school pictures, color run, and Halloween. We appreciate all you do!
We would also like to thank everyone who came out and supported our 1st Annual Lanoka Harbor School Color Run. It certainly was a colorful and awesome time. This is just the latest example of what our AMAZING PTO and Staff do for our school. It was really great to see so many of our students there with family and friends. We are looking forward to the next one! Maybe we will color-blast some teachers next time too???
The students and staff certainly enjoyed Red Ribbon Spirit Week. The Lanoka Harbor Fire Department came to the school to share their knowledge with us during Fire Prevention Week as well. On October 31st, the students were treated to a Halloween assembly filled with spooktacular activities for all!
Although Thanksgiving is still a few weeks from now, we would like to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving. We hope you and your family will have an opportunity to be together at this special time of year.

ENVIRONMENTAL CLUB RECYCLING PROGRAM
Americans spent a record $36.9 billion on candy in 2021—more than 600 million pounds of that candy is purchased just for Halloween. We all love celebrating with something sweet! However, the vast majority of candy wrappers end up in landfills due to the inability by most curbside recycling programs to recycle them. That’s where the Environmental Club, Rubicon, and Trash or Treasure come in!
The Environmental Club researched that by our school participating in Trash or Treasure, we don’t have to trash those candy wrappers and doom them to an eternity in a landfill—or, even worse, in our oceans. By filling up our school's candy wrapper recycling box, together we can help keep our planet clean!

Summer Reading Program
Students in Kindergarten through 6th grade participated in the Summer Reading Program. The children kept track of the hours they read on a reading log which they brought into school to be checked on several different days over the summer break. Students participating in the program earned a keychain and paw tags which varied by color depending on the number of hours read.
4 hours – white paw / 8 hours – gray paw / 16 hours - cardinal paw / 32+ hours – navy paw
Those students reading 32 hours or more, joined the Navy Nation of Summer Reading and were honored at the Board of Education Meeting on October 19th. The Navy Nation readers were also entered into a drawing to win a tablet. This year’s tablet winner was Amy Pine!
Lanoka is proud of all students who participated in the program and would like to give special recognition to those students who achieved Navy Nation status. Great job, everyone!

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK
Under the guidance of the Lanoka Harbor Volunteer Fire Company, Lanoka Harbor School students learned about fire safety during October. Third and fourth grade students participated in a fire safety poster contest and attended an assembly led by Fire Prevention Officer John Szafranski. Winners were selected from participants that created posters utilizing the theme: "Cooking safety starts with YOU! Pay attention to fire prevention”
RED RIBBON WEEK
During the week of October 23rd, Lanoka Harbor School celebrated Red Ribbon Week; the annual celebration of living a drug-free life. To spread the positive message and awareness of living drug-free, students participated in red ribbon-themed spirit days all week, and a district-wide coloring contest. This year's theme was "Make Healthy Choices & Be Kind To Your Mind!"
