CVSD Bus Fleet Cameras
Dear CVSD Community,
Over the winter break, while families everywhere enjoyed the holidays, CVSD transportation received a different kind of treat; internal and external cameras for our bus fleet. These cameras, which will provide a new level of safety for our students, are scheduled to be turned on the first week of February. The following protocols will be followed:
All surveillance camera recordings in the district will be subject to board policy currently under review by the CVSD School Board and will be posted on the District website.
Recordings from the internal cameras are not monitored in real time and will only be viewed after an incident and at the discretion of the Superintendent of Schools. As always, incidents on our buses are handled by the CVSD Chief Operations Officer or appropriate school administrator per that school’s procedures.
Recordings of automobiles which violate state laws regarding the passing of school buses will be turned over to the local police authority.
Cameras in CVSD are used only with the goal of improving the safety of our students. If you have any questions about the use of cameras, please contact your local principal or the CVSD COO, Jeanne Jensen, at 802-383-1234
News from Nurse Shelley
Please keep the following information in mind if your child is not feeling well. There are several different illnesses that seem to make their way through HCS throughout the year. These include Strep throat, stomach viruses, and of course the common cold and the Flu. For the health of all please remember and follow these guidelines:
- If your child has a fever (100 or higher) they should not return to school for 24 hours from the time of the fever passing – (without the use of fever reducing medication).
- If your child exhibits a rash and the cause is unknown please be in touch with your physician.
- If your child has vomited or had repeated episodes of diarrhea within the last 12 hours please keep them home until they have fully recovered. (No vomiting/diarrhea for at least 12 hours).
- If your child needs to be on medication during school hours please be sure to send it in the original/pharmacy container and enclose a note from the doctor for prescriptions. Students are not allowed to carry medication with them on the bus or in the school building.
- If your child has been put on antibiotics for Strep (or any other contagious condition) they need to have taken the medication for 24 hours before returning to school. If your child has been tested for Strep and you are waiting for results please keep them home.
- If your child has excessive yellow or green discharge from the nose and/or is coughing a lot, it is best to keep them home.
- If your child has itchy, red eyes with discharge, or they are stuck together in the morning, please be in contact with your physician about conjunctivitis (pink eye). This is highly contagious.
- When your child is staying home ill from school please let the office staff know the type of illness~ this helps me to know what illnesses are in the building and to watch for outbreaks.
Extra clothing
- It is very helpful for your child to have a full extra set (or 2 if they are staying for Part 2) of clothes in their backpack! I do have extras but not always the right size. It would be great if students of all ages had extra clothes, socks and shoes.
We are asking your help in keeping HCS a healthy place to be. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to call me at 482-6226. Please remind children to frequently wash their hands- the best defense against illness!
Respectfully,
Shelley Torrey, RN, School Nurse
CVSD School-Based Early Education Program Peer Lottery Application
The CVSD School-based Early Education Programs are now accepting applications for a random peer lottery drawing for the 2019-20 school year. Our preschools are 5 STAR licensed early education programs that provide play-based, developmentally appropriate environments for all children. Our curriculum is based on the Vermont Early Learning Standards (VELS) and Teaching Strategies Gold. We believe that a diverse classroom offers opportunities for adults and children to practice acceptance and compassion and also provides a broad range of learning experiences.
Our programs follow the CVSD school calendar. Peers who will be age 3 or older by September 1, 2019, but not yet 5 years old, are eligible to enter the lottery for our programs.
All applications must be received by February 8, 2019. Students will be selected via a lottery. Please send the applications to Candi LaFreniere @ clafreniere@cvsdvt.org. Please contact Julia Wayne at 802-482-6236 or e-mail jwayne@cvsdvt.org with questions.

Local Libraries to Host Mental Health Conversations
Between 1996 and 2016, the suicide rate in Vermont increased by more than 48%- the second highest increase nationally according to the CDC. This rising rate of suicide, paired with the social stigma attached to mental health problems, indicates a need for safe spaces for communities to learn and talk about issues of depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. Recognizing these issues within their own towns, Charlotte and Carpenter-Carse (Hinesburg) Libraries have teamed up to host Mental Health Conversations: Risk and Resilience during the month of February, 2019. The public libraries will host two evenings of panel presentations with mental health professionals, and a separate event that features Pulitzer Prize-winning and Emmy Award winning writer and critic Ron Powers, author of No One Cares About Crazy People at the Carpenter-Carse Library. Please click HERE for more information.
The panel discussions will take place on February 5th at the Charlotte Library, and February 20th at the Carpenter-Carse Library. Both panel presentations start at 7pm. The panelists are Charlotte McCorkel, LICSW, Project Director of Integration, Howard Center; Joanne Wolfe, MA, M.Ed, Licensed Psychologist; and Eliza Pillard LICSW, Family Wellness Coach at the Vermont Center for Children, Youth and Families at the UVM Medical Center. Themes will include anxiety, depression, and suicide prevention. Discussion topics will be what to look for (signs and symptoms) and how to start a conversation with a loved one. There will be time for questions and the libraries will provide online resources and a curated collection of print and video materials for browsing and borrowing.
The Carpenter-Carse Library will welcome Ron Powers on February 12th at 6:30pm. Ron Powers is New York Times bestselling author living in Vermont - he is also the author of sixteen books, his most recent one, No One Cares About Crazy People: The Chaos and Heartbreak of Mental Health in America, offers an account of the social history of mental illness in America as well as his personal story of his two sons' battles with schizophrenia. At the library Ron will speak of his family’s journey with mental illness as well as his research on mental health and the health care system.
These discussions and presentations are made possible by the “All of Us” grants through the National Network of Libraries of Medicine. The Carpenter-Carse and Charlotte libraries will also receive iPads through one of the grants. The iPads will be loaded with reputable medical resources, and then circulated at the libraries so patrons can browse a wealth of mental health information privately and securely.
This project is funded in part by the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services, under Cooperative Agreement Number UG4LM012347 with the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Worcester. The mental health conversations are part of Charlotte and Carpenter-Carse Libraries’ initiative, Healthy Communities: Head to Toe. Another topic the libraries will focus on is Tick-Borne Illnesses in April of 2019.
