Dresden Dragon
November 9, 2018
Our commitment at Dresden Elementary is to provide a challenging education program for all students within a safe, learning environment, which will enable students to function as productive, ethical and responsible global citizens. It is with pride that we hold the torch that provides light of high standards.
Greetings Dragonites,
As we journey into the month of November, we focus our attention on examining our student’s data. This is an opportune time to self-reflect. We can gain a perspective to better see “who we are” and where we are going”. At least in raising such questions, basic to any kind of understanding, we evidence the unique roles educators play towards developing the minds of students at Dresden. Yet another purpose, is to extend learning and maximize instruction. Over the next six weeks, let us strategize learning opportunities for all of our students. Our school has been very busy with parent conferences, professional development and other activities that enhance our students and school. Remember your purpose and strategize a plan of action to move your students towards progress.
Teacher please review your MAP continuum data and study what specific skills students need to be proficient. Our coaches are here to provide you with that support. Please see should have further questions. All teacher, ESOL,EIP, and special area teachers.

Grades
Teachers, please note excessive absences can adversely affect your students' education. We do understand problems and situations will present themselves, and some are beyond our control.
However, our students need a sense of consistency from their teachers.
Furthermore, absenteeism disrupts the natural flow of instruction. If teachers are absent, making the achievement strides will be an arduous task for the entire school. All teachers are expected to be present for their students on a daily basis.

From Grace Moore: Hello Everyone!
YOU DID IT! Welcome to the KaBOOM! all-star alumni!
I am thrilled the transformation of this space has become a MUCH DESERVED reality, but I will truly miss working with you every week!
You all came together to not only build a new play space for the kids at Dresden Elementary but from the feedback I’ve received from everyone, you forever impacted the lives of many volunteers.
I know this crazy project would not have been possible if it weren’t for all of your “behind the scenes” energy and sacrifice. THANK YOU is a complete understatement!! I hope you are incredibly proud of your efforts and realize the impact you have made for kids and kids to come.
I’ll say it again if your kids don’t tell you “THANK YOU” daily, know that they are so lucky to have you all as their support system!
· Teachers start time is 7:15, failure to sign in will result in directive actions.
· In support of the continued implementation of the DeKalb County School District (DCSD) K-12 Curriculum, students are required to take pre-assessments and post-assessments (benchmarks) for each unit of study. The purpose of each unit pre-assessment is to inform instruction and establish a baseline for student growth goals. The data results from the pre-assessments should be used to plan instruction. At the end of the unit, the post-assessment data should help teachers identify students who need remediation or acceleration.
· District News - After reviewing the district-wide trend data in the "Prior to Learning" and "Assessments of Learning" categories, post assessment results during the 2018-2019 school year will be recorded in Infinite Campus as "Prior to Learning and Assessments of Learning" with a category weight of 0%. Please remember that the "Assessments of Learning" category includes summative assessments like culminating projects, performances, unit tests, and final exams.
Professional Learning
· On Thursday, October 25th Mr. Hawkins and Ms. Andrea Jones redelivered the information presented by the Science Department of the District. The name of the class was Developing Literacy Skills through Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning. Teachers pictured below are testing how strong compressed air is, and are determining if air is strong enough to lift the item.
Teachers completed a KWL chart on Scientific Explanation, read an article on Air Pressure, conducted an experiment to determine how strong air is, and write their own Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning on the experiment.

RED RIBBON WEEK
"The Dresden Elementary Counseling Department coordinated a fun and educational Red Ribbon Week during the week of October 22-26. We celebrated and promoted the importance of living a drug free and healthy life. During this week, students learned about the various types of drugs and their harmful affects on the mind and body as well as how to enjoy life without having to involve drug-use. It was a great week!"
