Pine Run Students READ to Succeed!
Sustained silent reading, also known as SSR, is independent, quiet reading. It's a block of time, typically 10 to 30 minutes, regularly devoted to recreational reading. Since reading is an individual act for the most part, it is natural to read silently. When teachers and parents offer sustained silent reading time, the benefits of children is HUGE:
- Enhanced Reading Enjoyment
- Increased Comprehension
- Vocabulary Building
- Improvesd Writing Skills

A BRAVO-WORTHY BOOK FAIR!
Thanks to the hard work of our AMAZING Home and School Association, and the generous support of our WONDERFUL Pine Run Community, last week's book fair was a giant success!
Based on sales, our library is receiving $1,708.49 for future purchases, along with four hundred dollars worth of new books!
Mrs. Thomas will be buying new easy-read nonfiction for our kindergarten and first grade readers, nonfiction for 6th grade assessment and our middle grade readers, and all of the Caldecott and Newbery Award Winning fiction being announced in January.
Many thanks to all! What a joy it is to watch the kids select books during the fair and get so excited about reading!

Consequences are Life's Natural Teachers
Correction Over Protection
The best way we can prepare students for the world that awaits them is not to protect them from life's best lessons. The best thing we can do is to lead them to make restitution for their mistakes or poor choices.
The Landscape vs. The Selfie
We all know what a “selfie” is. It’s that photo we take of ourselves when we’re having a good hair day, or when we’re doing something fun that we want to capture. A landscape, in contrast, is a bigger picture. It’s a photo we take when we step back and can see more than a single person. More than just one's self. We see the horizon. When it comes to life, we’ve got to help kids see the landscape, not just the selfie.
What Parents and Educators Can Do:
- Expose children to realities that enable them to see the big picture. Help them to empathize with the plight of others, not just themselves.
- Discuss getting beyond fairness and legality (the bare minimum) to morality (our highest aim). Teach them to take the high road with others.
- Walk beside them as they face consequences for their missteps, but don’t remove them. It’s the best way to teach how life works.
- Steer them to practice justice, empathy and responsibility over self-preservation.
