September 15th through October 15th is Hispanic Heritage Month. In 1968 Hispanic Heritage Week was signed into law under Lyndon B. Johnson. 20 years later, the week was expanded to encompass an entire month. Sept 15th is significant because it marks the beginning of the dates of Independence for many countries in the Americas. During National Hispanic Heritage Month, Ridgeview will highlight the contributions of Hispanics and Latinos as well as trivia!

P.A.W. Time Introduction

Hello PAW Tiger Families. I wanted to reach out to you today to introduce some of the materials that we will be sharing with your students through their PAW Time. Students and staff focus on building relationships, providing social/emotional support, strategies for success, and team building in PAW Time. It is a smaller group that meets first thing in the morning to help students start their day with a positive experience.

One of the social emotional learning objectives this year is the introduction of the “R-Factor” as a decision making tool to improve outcomes by helping students understand what they control and how to make the best choice for them in any situation. The R-Factor stresses using a disciplined response in order to manage your response to an event that happens within your 20 square feet. Several successful businesses, sports teams and schools all utilize the R-Factor and you may recognize the equation “E+R=O” as one of the core principles of the program. PLSD staff was trained on the R-Factor last year and I look forward to introducing it to our students this year.

We will be introducing the R-Factor in PAW Time on the week of 9/21 during the in-person days.

R-Factor: Event + Response = Outcome

Here are some helpful links so that you can have conversations with your student(s):

We will be sharing some other PAW Time resources and materials with you periodically through the year to help support your students.

Pickerington Local Schools Food Service Department

Reasons why you should take advantage of FREE MEALS that our district is offering:

Ø It saves you time shopping and preparing meals.

Ø It is convenient!

Ø It is comforting and familiar to your kids.

Ø It is delicious and nutritious.

Ø It helps keep the food supply chain flowing. This helps farmers, truckers and local employees.

Ø Each meal served provides funding to your district’s food service department from USDA-not local monies. Free meals will continue until December 31, 2020 or when the USDA runs out of funding.

Ø It may extend your household food budget.

Ø These meals help to keep our staff employed.

Ø Every meal we prepare is carefully prepared with enhanced food safety protocols in place.

Ø We LOVE to provide meals to our students. It is what we do best and it helps us to deal with the disruptions around us.

Order forms go out on Fridays and are due each Tuesday by 10:00 a.m.

******PLEASE BE AWARE YOU MUST SUBMIT A FORM EACH WEEK THAT YOU WANT TO RECEIVE MEALS. The meals are for your student's virtual days.******

Parent Communication Page-Weekly Classroom Information

In an effort to reduce the amount of emails that you are getting from the school, we have created a Classroom Information page off of the Ridgeview website. Every week by 8:40 am, the teachers will have their lesson plans for that week posted. This way, families have all the information in one location (you just need to know which team/teachers your student has). We suggest bookmarking this page so that you can easily access it. This is a work in progress so please be patient as we make sure we have the correct documents linked.

Please check this page to find weekly classroom lesson updates.

Big picture

Diagnostic Assessment Information

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This year, all students attending school in person will be taking the i-Ready Reading and i-Ready or ALEKS Math Diagnostic assessment at school. The Diagnostic is important because it will let us identify what your student knows and what they need to learn. The assessments help us better understand students’ strengths and areas for growth, but only when that data is accurate. Regardless of where students take the assessments, it’s critical that you prepare and motivate them to put forth their best effort.

This is a different type of assessment. Your child will benefit from your support and encouragement to ensure the information received accurately reflects what they know and still need to learn.

Junior High School Testing Calendar

On testing days, teachers will administer the test during the students ELA and Math classes.

9/14 & 9/15 Reading Diagnostic Cohort A

9/17 & 9/18 Reading Diagnostic Cohort B

9/21 & 9/22 Math Diagnostic Cohort A

9/24 & 9/25 Math Diagnostic Cohort B

What is i-Ready and ALEKS?

i-Ready and ALEKS are online programs that help us determine your child’s strengths and areas for growth, personalize their learning, and monitor their progress throughout the school year. i-Ready and ALEKS allows us to meet your child where they are and provides us with data to inform instruction.

The assessments are adaptive assessments that adjust its questions to suit your child’s needs. Each item a student receives is based on their answer to the previous question. For example, a series of correct answers will result in slightly harder questions, while a series of incorrect answers will yield slightly easier ones. The purpose of this is not to give your child a score or grade but to determine how to best support their learning.

Additionally, based on the recommendations of i-Ready and their research partners, PLSD will not be using i-Ready Diagnostic results administered at home to make decisions associated with Ohio’s prescreening and identification of gifted students. Instead, we will use the data from the Diagnostic taken at home for classroom instructional decision-making only.

i-Ready and ALEKS Instruction provide students with lessons based on their individual strengths and areas for growth. These lessons are interactive and provide strategic supports to keep your child engaged as they learn.

What can I do to help?

To help prepare your child for the Diagnostic, encourage them to:

  • Get a good night’s sleep and eat a full breakfast the day of the assessment.

  • Try their best on each question and try not to rush.

  • Try not to worry about questions they do not know—remind them that it is expected they will only get about half of the questions correct.

  • Be respectful of other students who take longer to finish.
