Ranger Nation Network Newsletter
Week of January 15, 2024
Please keep checking the website for Tuesday weather updates, as of now we are having school. If LCISD makes any changes, you will be notified. They are closely monitoring the conditions. Stay safe and warm, Rangers!
Dear Ranger Nation Parents & Guardians,
I appreciate your ongoing support for the success of our students at Terry High School. As you may recall from my recent newsletter, I discussed the importance of punctuality in fostering a conducive learning environment. I shared with you that a new tardy policy was on the horizon.
Last semester, there was an accumulation of 9,680 tardies among THS students. If a student missed only ten instructional times, on average, that's a loss of 96,800 minutes of valuable instructional time. Such numbers are excessive and significantly impact the overall learning progressions of our Rangers.
To address this issue, our new tardy policy aims to instill a sense of responsibility and accountability. This policy will be effective Tuesday, January 16, 2024, and all students will be given a clean slate.
I want my expectations to be crystal clear: all students must arrive at class on time. We cannot tolerate activities such as hanging out in restrooms, walking laps in the hallways, or engaging in work avoidance. I understand that things happen and that there will be some exceptional extracurricular circumstances for students. I welcome individual conversations about those situations.
The new tardy policy is as follows:
- 5 Tardies = Administrator Conference with the student and counselor. A behavior contract will also be issued and the parent will be notified.
- 10 Tardies = Parent Conference with Administrator and Counselor. Serious & Persistent Misbehavior Level 2 will be discussed as well as the 90% Compulsory Attendance Rule and its impact on graduation.
- 15 Tardies = Suspension for Serious and Persistent Level 3.
- 20 Tardies = Recommendation for DAEP Placement for continued Serious and Persistent misbehavior.
Some may think this policy is too harsh and students need more time to get to class. However, please keep in mind that most classes are grouped into pods. Therefore, most 9th-grade courses are in the same area. Most 10th-grade classes are in the same area, etc.
Working together can create an environment that fosters punctuality and prioritizes learning. Your involvement is crucial in ensuring this policy's success and our children's success. If you have any concerns or questions, please don't hesitate to contact your student's grade-level administrator directly. Thank you for your continued partnership in shaping a positive educational experience where learning is the priority and high expectations are the only option. Again, we welcome solutions-focused conversations.
Please feel free to reach out to your child's grade level administrator with any concerns or questions. We are committed to being solution-focused and working hand-in-hand with you and will respond promptly within 24 hours. If you are unable to get a response, you are also able to contact me directly at: melissia.smith@lcisd.org.
Thank you for your ongoing support and dedication to our students' success.

THS ACT School Day Registration
Terry HS will offer juniors the opportunity to the ACT for FREE the week of March 26-28. This opportunity is only open to juniors.
Why is the ACT important?
Colleges do not care which test you take, they care wich test you do better on.
Students are typically better at one test than they are the other (ACT or SAT).
Students must be college level ready to have an off campus period during senior year, this is another opportunity to meet college level standards.
Students wanting to take dual credit classes during the 2024-2025 school year but have not met college standards have another opportunity to meet the testing requirements.
ACT/SAT scores may be required for college admissions for the Class of 2025
Sign-up Deadline: March 8, 2024
