Ralph Russo Field Dedication

Last week, HVMS had the privilege of dedicating our athletic field in honor of Mr. Ralph Russo, an educator and coach who left a lasting impact on the HVMS community. Thank you to everyone who came out to see the dedication and celebrate HVMS turning 50!

Let’s GLOW-CRAZY!

Students, mark your calendars for our first-ever GLOW Social – it’s glowing down Friday, November 11th! Wear your favorite white shirts or neon colors, bring your glow sticks and necklaces, and plan to come enjoy an afternoon of food, music, and games with your friends!

Time: 3:30-5:30 p.m.


We’ll have a LIVE DJ playing music, games set up to play, pizza and chips to munch on, photo areas, and more! Let’s glow!

Visit the Titan Parent Portal to set up an account to deposit money into your child's lunch account. Online payments have a processing fee of $2.60 per transaction. Parents/guardians can set up a free account to monitor student purchases.


Free/reduced meal applications for school year 2022-2023 are now being accepted! Online applications are available here.

Eagles of the Month

HVMS has begun recognizing eight students from each grade level each month to be our Eagles of the Month. Hidden Valley Middle School Eagles of the Month display outstanding behavior both inside and outside the classroom by consistently meeting HVMS SOAR expectations of being safe, organized, accountable, and respectful. Eagles of the Month demonstrate opportunity ready skills including communication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and citizenship. These students exhibit a positive attitude toward their peers, school, and community, and they maintain a focus on continuous improvement.

SOAR Card Recipients

Students can receive SOAR cards at HVMS by going above and beyond our school-wide expectations of being safe, organized, accountable, and respectful. Our entire matrix of school-wide expectations is posted to the right. We will be distributing SOAR cards to students and parents/guardians by email, and recipients will be entered into monthly drawings for prizes. Fall Choir Concert

Congratulations to Mr. Miller and our choir students for a wonderful fall choir concert that they hosted at Hidden Valley High School last week - the students sounded great!

Mrs. Riddle's 6th Grade English

Mrs. Riddle's English 6 class collaborated, communicated, and practiced critical thinking as they analyzed clues to solve a murder mystery.

Mr. Parries' 7th Grade English

Mr. Parries' English 7 class practiced collaboration and communication as they worked to complete an adjective scramble activity.

Mr. Coleman's 7th Grade Science

Mr. Coleman's 7th grade science classes conducted observations on gummy worms and learned about differences between qualitative and quantitative data.

Burton Center for Arts and Technology

Kids' Tech University

Please see the information below from the Virginia Tech Kids' Tech University Program:


Kids' Tech University (KTU, https://ktu.fralinlifesci.vt.edu ) is a spring program developed by the Fralin Life Sciences Institute at Virginia Tech and Virginia 4-H, that puts scientists and engineers in front of children to encourage the exploration of intriguing topics in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).


This year we are offering 2 concurrent programs on Jan. 28, Feb. 18, March 18 and April 1, 2023. The In-Person Program will be held at the Virginia Tech campus (Blacksburg, VA) and will include up to 250 kids (ages 9-12 by Sept. 30, 2022) and their parents. Kids and parents will watch interactive sessions presented by renowned research scientists and participate in hands-on activities led by undergraduate students and VT faculty/staff. Each day's events will center on common themes related to everyday life. The Virtual Program will be offered on the same dates as the In-Person program. The interactive sessions will be live-streamed via zoom and materials for hands-on activities will be mailed home to each Virtual participant.


Registration opens Oct. 17th. Please register for either the In-Person Program (Registration fee of $75) OR the Virtual Program ($50). Scholarships are available. Please see- https://ktu.fralinlifesci.vt.edu/sign-up.html

Branch Group's G.I.R.L Construction Experience

This year, Branch Group will be hosting the inaugural G.I.R.L (Girls in Real Life) Construction Experience. Partnering with the Girl Scouts of Skyline Council, they will give girls from kindergarten to twelfth grade the opportunity to learn and experience real-life construction concepts in a fun, safe, and judgment-free zone. HVMS PTSO

Our PTSO is instrumental in providing support to our entire school community, and the success of the program depends on you! Dues are $5 per individual who is joining. 100% of our membership fees go directly to supporting our school community. Moe's Taco Kits

We have partnered with Moe’s Southwest Grill to offer Taco Meal Kits with all the ingredients needed for an easy, fun family dinner for only $35.99 plus tax.


$5 from every Taco Kit sold during this event will go directly toward supporting HVMS! Pick-up will be at Hidden Valley Middle School between 5:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.


This will be a monthly fundraiser, and our next date is Tuesday, October 11.

TECHNOLOGY CORNER

Technology Issues

Students should restart their computers daily. Restarting laptops daily helps ensure they remain up-to-date with the latest software. If a student is having any issue that is not resolved by restarting, please have your student let his or her teacher know, and they will contact our Computer Depot for support.

ATHLETICS

General Information

6th, 7th, and 8th grade students are allowed to compete on the middle school athletic teams. All participating students must have a current VHSL sports physical dated on or after May 1, 2022. No student will be permitted to participate in tryouts or practice without a completed VHSL physical form on file. Additionally, all students must have health insurance if they want to participate.


Athletic ticket prices: adult tickets will be $5, and student tickets are $2. These funds are used to help offset the cost for officials, transportation to away games, and team equipment

Girls' Basketball Tryouts

Hidden Valley Middle School girls' basketball tryouts will take place on October 17th and October 18th from 3:45 p.m. - 5:15 p.m. A VHSL physical must be on file with the athletic director to participate in tryouts.

HVMS Cheer

HVMS and WBMS Cheerleaders teamed up for some fun stunting at the home football game against William Byrd Middle. Thank you to both teams for demonstrating amazing sportsmanship!

Open Gym/Field Information

Athletes must have a completed VHSL physical dated after May 1, 2022 on file with the HVMS athletic director to participate in open gyms/fields or tryouts. For questions, email Mrs. Riganti (hriganti@rcps.us).

Wrestling

Hidden Valley Middle School will host open gyms for athletes interested in wrestling during the 2022 season. Open gyms will be from 3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays starting September 26, 2022.
