Reaching All Learners
From Lori Desautles:
This second part of the year I am working on a new discipline/ engagement model for schools and classrooms! Discipline challenges are regulation challenges!
1. When we are in a the survival brain or moving to the fight flight freeze brain state, the shelf life of the amygdala is about 5 to 7 seconds and our brains are beginning to defend and protect and look for threats through nonverbal communications!
2. Discipline begins with prevention/ we teach brain intervals , focused attention practices, awareness of emotional triggers, and coping strategies as procedures and routines. We teach small and medium and large back up systems and as a class we define what a natural consequence truly is! We create together our class agreements!
3. As a class, we know that everyone gets what they need and that this could look different for everyone!
4. As the teacher my brain state matters more or as much as my students, and I am learning that if I am not in my prefrontal cortex, I cannot discipline effectively!
5. We use morning meeting and bell work time to set the brain states of our students the minute they walk into the classroom.
6. We have a table of buckets labeled / Worries- Dump them in!
Take What You Need/ and Affirmations. We also have water, some hand lotion, ( scented and unscented) and some menthol rub for sore EMOTIONAL spots! Students can choose a sensation word and draw what numb, fuzzy or tingly looks like and they can place the muscle rub on the spot that feels hurt or is pained! Remembering what is sharable is bearable!!
