Dear Charlemagne Families:
Thanks to everyone who came out to connect at Trivia Night! We had a great time and congratulations to the winning team, The Inbetweeners!
Upcoming Events in December
December is an exciting month at Charlemagne with three special events planned:
The week of December 2 will kick off a canned food drive in collaboration with Food for Lane County. We will engage in a little bit of friendly competition between classes and work together to increase awareness about hunger in our community. The canned food drive ends December 13-- students have two weeks to bring in cans of food.
December 3 kicks off our Direct Drive, which coincides with GivingTuesday, a global generosity movement designed to encourage people to invest in their local communities, collaborate together, and celebrate generosity and kindness. We hope you will consider making a donation to Charlemagne in the spirit of thinking globally and acting locally.
The Winter Market (formerly Holiday Market) will be Friday afternoon, December 13 In the gym. This is a great opportunity for students to show off their handiwork-- crafts, baked goods, paper products, etc. When families come to the Winter Market, we’re also encouraging everyone to bring a winter warmth item for donation to First Place Family Shelter. Hats, gloves, socks, and coats in all kid sizes are all welcome.
Read-a-Thon
Charlemagne’s annual Read-a-Thon started Friday, November 1. We hope the students got a lot of reading time logged! All students who participate will receive a small prize and be featured on our Reading Stars wall. Students who read books in French will get a special prize for any amount of time they read in French.
In addition, one lucky winner, drawn at random from all participants will win an e-reader. As usual, the class with the most participation will get a party… and new this year, that same class will also choose the color Mme Courtney dyes her hair in celebration of reading!
The last day for collecting envelopes is November 18. If you haven’t already turned in your envelope, please do so tomorrow!
The party for the Read-a-Thon winning class will be November 22, and we could use some parent volunteers to help set up and participate. You can sign up here:

Class Reps
We are looking for parents willing to volunteer as representatives for your child’s class to liaison with the PTO once a month at our monthly meetings. This will ensure the families in each classroom are connected with the PTO. Please email frenchiepto@gmail.com if you’re willing to volunteer. We currently need reps for:
First Grade - Mme. Roadman
Second Grade - Mme. Sion & Mme. Kim
Third Grade - Mme. Ariel
Fourth Grade - Mme. Shelli & Mme. Jana
Fifth Grade - Mme. Grabowski
Love Food Not Waste
Prior to winter break, Charlamagne will start composting food in classrooms and in the cafeteria. This is part of a larger District effort to practice sustainability and responsibility. We will have a special presentation in the lunchroom on December 6 and composting will start directly after that. We know many of your students have already developed an excellent awareness around composting and we hope their expertise will ease our transition into this endeavor.
Next Parent Equity Team
The next parent equity team meeting will be Monday, November 25 at 6:30 p.m. in Room 1. Our first meeting centered on our “why,” our vision for the team, and deepening our conversations about inequity. The purpose of the group is to encourage conversations about equity and social justice, examine inequities and disparities in student achievement and experiences in schools, foster a safe and healthy school climate, promote an inclusive culture that engages and draws on the assets of students, families, staff and community members and foster leadership in families, students and staff. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Swag
In need of some Charlemagne gear? You can find youth and adult sweatshirts and T-shirt’s in the display case across from Bernadette’s office. Help yourself by finding your size and putting payment in the grey PTO cash/check box to the right of the library door. Prices are posted next to the swag.
Welcome to Our New School Nurse
Welcome to our new school nurse Jenny Downes! Jenny previously worked as a pediatric nurse in private practice prior to coming to 4j where she has now been for two years. We’re excited to have her on staff to support our students’ health needs.
Next Campus Clean-up Planned
Please join us after school on Monday, December 16 for our next campus clean-up! If the weather cooperates, we will find some more outside projects. Most likely, we will be inside working on some room moves and materials organization.
