Second Grade News
Week of April 23-27
Reading/Language Arts
This week we are reading biographies. The students read the story of Brave Bessie who was the first African American female pilot. Our reading skill this week focused on putting events in the order that they happened. 2nd graders practiced by reading many short biographies and then putting events in order. We are working on how to write summaries about real people that only include the most important facts.
This week we are working on spelling words that have the pattern oo and ue.
Math
This week we are all about making change. This has been a challenging unit for all of the 2nd graders. We practiced subtracting money amounts and now we are practicing the strategy of counting up. Please continue practicing this skill at home!
Social Studies
We have been talking about the role of local government in Hendricks. We learned about who our town mayor is and what she does for our community. We also learned about the importance of voting from Mr. Amundson in Junior Achievement. The 2nd graders discussed what they would do for HPS if they were given $500. Then, they were able to participate in their own mock voting to decide which would be best: spend the money on art, recycling, or a butterfly garden? The votes were taken and a recycling program was chosen.
