Class Act Charter School submitted by Paula Zwicke and Travis Augustine
WRCCS Mentor School Program Now Peer Support School Program
Mrs. Zwicke applied on behalf of Class ACT to be a statewide Peer Support School, formerly the Mentor School Program created as part of the federal charter school grant Wisconsin DPI (Department of Public Instruction) obtained five years ago. When the Mentor School program started three years ago, WRCCS (Wisconsin Resource Center for Charter Schools) asked Mrs. Zwicke to apply to the program on behalf of Class ACT. Since then, WRCCS has paired Class ACT to one charter school each year, and newly awarded a subgrant from the DPI. Our responsibility to these new or expanding schools and WRCCS/DPI has been assisting staff with navigating the growing pains inevitable with a changing, high-quality school and ensuring these schools meet grant competencies. Class ACT has also led quarterly PLNs (Personal Learning Network) virtual sessions open to all subgrantee schools. WRCCS contracted with Class ACT for $10,000 each year to cover expenses and compensation.
This very successful program has evolved into a network of mentor charter schools with diverse strengths. To capitalize on this, rather than pair schools one-to-one, the Peer Support Schools will work with several schools around specific areas. For example, two of Class ACT’s strengths are project-based learning (PBL) and community engagement & partnerships. Any subgrantee school may reach out to us independently or by referral based on recommendations from WRCCS or other charter schools. Contracts will have a base compensation, and any additional amount will be determined by support performed.
