Ideal vs. Real Gases

How gases should function verses how they do function

Ideal Gas Behavior

  • particles are far apart
  • attractions between particles don't count (the particles don't repel or attract each other)
  • particles have barely negligible volume
  • gases follow the gas laws

Real Gas Behavior

  • Attractions and repulsions are negligible when the distance between molecules is large, but they do become larger as the molecules become closer together
  • gases can deviate from ideal behavior under neath extreme conditions such as low temperature and high pressure
