Music Updates from Ms. Parker
Hi Everyone! Here are some new music activities for the week!
Chrome Music Lab – This is a fun website where you can play around with various aspects of music. One of my favorites is Song Maker where you can click on different colored boxes that each play a different pitch. See of you can write one of the songs we learned in class in Song Maker! Also feel free to play around with some of the other apps on the website.
Music Choice Boards – You may have noticed that there were new music choice boards added to the Learning at Home digital curriculum. I wanted to give you a few resources to help with those choice boards. I am linking both of the boards below for easy reference.
- The first is a song choice board with 12 songs on it – some you may know, others will be new! Here is a link to a folder with sing along videos for each of the songs on the board if you don’t already know it. I challenge you to try to learn a new song or two! Song Choice Board Song Folder
- The second is a musical activity choice board. This one contains various activities that can be done at home. I challenge everyone in 1st grade and up to practice using the rhythms (Remember, “the rhythm is the way the words go”) that you know and see if you can write the rhythm to a song we have sung in class. Music Choice Board
House on Music Street – Here is the next episode! See if you can come up with words that rhyme with the colors in Ida Red. Also, does the song from the music box on the fancy shoe sound familiar? Hint: it’s one of the songs on the song choice board. House on Music Street Episode 6
Recorders – I know that there have been questions about recorders and getting them returned. Here is the plan for the recorders for 4th and 5th grade:
- If a student brought a recorder from home and left it in the music room, it has been given to the homeroom teacher to pack with their belongings to be picked up during student item pickup. There were a few without a name (but in distinctive cases). If you brought a recorder from home and did not write your name on it, please email me ASAP and describe the case it was in so I can get it back to you.
- 5th grade recorders that were purchased online through SchoolCashOnline have been refunded.
- 4th grade recorders that were purchased online or through the school supply pack will be held onto at the school until next year. I have a list of those students and will make sure they get them when we get back.
I miss seeing everyone in class and making music together! I hope these activities will help you create your own musical experiences at home. As always, feel free to email me (Heather.Parker@cfisd.net) with any questions or to show me what you have been up to.

Art with Ms. K.
Hello artists!
I hope you are all staying healthy and busy! Just a few more weeks to go!
I wanted to share with you an image of a piece of chalk art that I did this week for a sidewalk chalk competition that my college (Savannah College of Art and Design) holds every year! This year, I chose to do a drawing of our mascot, the Bee. Our school president perfectly summarizes why this is the mascot for an art school:
“The bee (our mascot!) symbolizes hope. Back in 1978, when my family and I created SCAD, many people said our little dream would never fly. Our mission to focus on creative careers was very much ahead of its day. Seeking encouragement in those early years, I was reminded of a study completed by French entomologist Antoine Magnan, who noted that a bee’s flight should be impossible. The bee’s body is far too large, its wings minuscule in comparison. The bee, of course, flies anyway, appearing to defy the laws of physics and rising to great heights. I guess bees have never paid much mind to what others think! And neither does SCAD.”
Although this was a prompt they provided for me, I also felt like it exemplified where we all find ourselves during this strange time; small, working hard at what we can, but together we are strong and capable of so much more than we realize! I hope you all are still creating and imagining things!
Next week, the art challenges and activities will, once again, come from our school district! Some may look similar to past challenges of mine, but they all look like fun! I’m going to see what I can do with these myself!
Art teachers from all over CFISD have worked together to come up with these wonderful Artist’s Choice Boards! Think of them like a Menu at a Restaurant. You can pick whatever inspires you, and you can certainly choose more than one!
*Note to parents: Just like my art challenges, the district would like to emphasize that these activities are suggestions and completely optional! They are simply ideas to help break up that quarantine boredom, bring some enrichment and creativity to your day, and get those creative juices flowing! Any grade level (and any family members!) are free to get involved!
If you participate in any of our art challenges, please share so we can see! Options are:
-Post a picture on Instagram and tag our studio account @hesartstudio to be featured!
-Email pictures to me to then be used (with your permission and credit to the artist) at kirsten.gould@cfisd.net
I hope these ideas help in some small way, and if you have any questions, suggestions, or would like to share something you’ve made, PLEASE don’t hesitate to reach out! I look forward to seeing what you create this week! I love and miss you all! Have a great week, Lions! Stay healthy and keep creating!
