The Superstar Special

Newsletter for the C.L. Smith Elementary Superstars

December 2015

From the Principal:

Thanks to all who came and celebrated the growth of your Superstar during Conference Week! We appreciate the time and effort it takes to get to the school and meet for conferences, but it also sends a clear message to students that school is important, which directly impacts their ability to succeed.

I wanted to let you know about a unique opportunity coming to campus Tuesday evenings in late February and early March. We will be hosting Effective Discipline with Love and Respect, a free parenting course presented by Ximena Ames. The class will be in the Smith library from 6:00-8:00 Tuesday evenings February 23-March 15. For more information contact the C.L. Smith office, the Adult school at 549-1222 or check out the flyer here.

This month our 4th-6th graders will be learning about Internet Safety with a presentation from the SLO Sheriff's department on December 9. Growing up in a digital age creates new ways for mistakes to be made and the way a situation is handled can transform a potentially embarrassing situation into a learning opportunity. Edward Chen, Director of Technology at The Nueva School offers these basic guidelines for parents handling a child's computer related incident:

Practice P.O.I.S.E.

P= Pause

Give yourself time to think objectively

What your child claims to have happened is one perspective, be open to other perspectives.

I=Information Gathering

Find out and write down the facts, get screen shots

S=Seek a Teachable Moment

In the moment, comfort, console and encourage, but look for the learning opportunity down the road.

E= Educate and Encourage

Your child needs to learn about the ethical way to handle this situation in the future

Any time the incident involves another student or school family, please inform your child's teacher or the office as soon as possible. For the full article from Edward Chen go to:

Have a safe and restful Winter Break! See you in 2016!
