We Empower 2014

It was great to see and hear so much about innovation and motivating learning in student-centered conversations that took place yesterday! The key note speaker, Martin Moran, really pushed us to think about what our students are creating during learning. It is valuable for us to display or show as many works in progress as possible... because this provides genuine opportunities for feedback, and students and teachers can learn from one another!

I am looking forward to stopping by Team mid-day collaboration times, or other small moments in time we can meet, and hearing about your "take-aways" from our W.E. 14 in-service day.

I also just found an article that perfectly aligns with the focus of many of yesterday's sessions... meaningful student engagement.

Golden Rules for Engaging Students in Learning Activities

Persevering Through Poverty

This past week, Robyn shared with me an article featuring a book recently released in October, Hand to Mouth: Living in Bootstrap America, by Linda Tirado. The autobiographical stories about poverty she tells have been widely acclaimed since last year, through a blog she created, and the two articles below are worth reading as we continue to think about the impact of generational poverty and/or situational poverty that many of our Edgewood families are experiencing.

Why Poor People Stay Poor

Linda Tirado: What I Miss About Being Poor

With the Holiday Season in full swing, I fondly reflected on the fact that Edgewood School has a wonderful history of reaching out to help families in our community. Michelle Strezo has obtained eight $50 Jewel gift cards, for our homeless families, and I would like to have a staff Goodwill Drive this week. Please bring in any lightly used or new items, to be collected in boxes in our Lounge. On Friday, we will deliver all items collected from you to the Goodwill Store and Donation Center in Woodridge, on Woodward Ave.

School Psychologist to help during medical leave...

This past week, Nancy Ericksen and I interviewed a candidate who will be able to work with us while Nancye Wertz is still away on medical leave. Diana Valdivia has helped in the past with bilingual evaluations in Woodridge, and she has been hired full-time now to help both Murphy and Edgewood Special Ed. teams as our school psychologist. We are hoping that she will be in both buildings by next week, and I know that she will receive a warm welcome from our staff!
