What is Short-Term Independent Study?
What is Short-Term Independent Study (STIS)?
Short-Term Independent Study is an educational option for students who will be absent for three (3) to fourteen (14) school days. This is an excellent option for students who know ahead of time that they will be out of town or unable to attend school temporarily. Not only does it provide a way for students to keep up on missed work while they are gone, it can also excuse extended absences.
What you need to know about STIS:
· Students who need to be absent for more than 15 days are not eligible for a STIS contract.
· Parents are responsible for notifying the school at least 5 business days before the start of the STIS contract.
· Students are responsible for completing and returning all assigned work upon their return to school.
· Work is evaluated by the teacher and attendance credit is assigned according to the amount of work completed.
If you know that you are going to be out of town or have an obligation that is going to take your student out of school for 3-14 days, please contact Ms. Becky to see about setting up a Short -Term Independent Study Contract.

Nurse's Corner
Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease is caused by viruses. A person infected with one of these viruses is contagious, which means that they can pass the virus to other people.
The virus can spread to others through an infected person’s
· Nose and throat secretions, such as saliva, drool, or nasal mucus
· Fluid from blisters or scabs
· Feces (poop)
People with hand, foot, and mouth disease are usually most contagious during the first week that they are sick. People can sometimes spread the virus to others for days or weeks after symptoms go away or if they have no symptoms at all.
How it spreads
You can get hand, foot, and mouth disease by
· Contact with respiratory droplets containing virus particles after a sick person coughs or sneezes
· Touching an infected person or making other close contacts, like kissing, hugging, or sharing cups or eating utensils
· Touching an infected person’s feces, such as changing diapers, then touching your eyes, nose, or mouth
· Touching objects and surfaces that have the virus on them, like doorknobs or toys, then touching your eyes, nose, or mouth
Because it is common and usually mild, children can continue to go to childcare and schools as long as they:
· Have no fever.
· Have no uncontrolled drooling with mouth sores.
· Feel well enough to participate in classroom activities.
Talk with your child’s healthcare provider if you are still not sure when it is okay for them to return. In some cases, the local health department may require children with HFMD to stay home to control an outbreak.

FIGHTING FENTANYL In EL DORADO COUNTY
Dear Community Partners,
El Dorado COPE is launching a Public Awareness Campaign to increase community awareness of the rise of fentanyl substance use and fentanyl-related overdoses locally, statewide, and nationally.
The Fighting Fentanyl in EDC campaign provides the EDC community with easily-accessible information regarding fentanyl, substance use disorders, and how to respond when someone overdoses. El Dorado COPE has compiled information regarding the signs of an overdose, testing for fentanyl, and knowing your rights. The campaign website page also acts as a directory of SUD-related services in El Dorado County and provides agency information for SUD treatment, MAT treatment, free Narcan distribution sites, and harm reduction services.
Please join us in promoting this important new resource. We have designed and created a handful of materials to share with our community partners. The Fighting Fentanyl campaign features:
- A ready-to-print informational brochure
- 3 ready-to-print wallet cards that highlights the campaign and specific information regarding SUDs and 4 ready-to-post social media graphic sets that promote sections of the campaign
**Campaign materials are currently being translated into Spanish and will be released to the public within the next couple of weeks.
