Principal's Pulse

What a wonderful Fall Festival we had last weekend! Thank you so much for all of your volunteer hours to make this event a success. We appreciate each one of you.

You should have received your child's progress report yesterday in the Thursday folders. Please sign and return it to school on Monday if you have not already done so.

Next week, our 2nd - 4th graders will take their quarterly tests. Please see below for the schedule of these tests.

Thank you for your attention to the dress code item I discussed here last week. I noticed less issues this week. I need your help with another item that has come to my attention.

We receive many calls each day to alter the normal end of day pick-up routine for various students. As a parent, you are calling for your one child, and it seems to be no big deal to rearrange the plans for your one child. I totally agree! However, when we receive these calls at 2:45 and the number of children affected goes up to 20, 30 or even 50 a day, it becomes more difficult to manage.

We want to ensure all of our students get home safely. Therefore, it is very important if you have to make an adjustment to your child's dismissal routine to call the office before 2:00. This allows the office staff plenty of time to get the information to the appropriate teacher before dismissal routines have begun. Please do not come to the office to pick your child up a few minutes early unless you have a doctor's appointment as this also disrupts the normal flow of dismissal. Thank you for your assistance.

Remember to keep reading with your children every night and discuss their learning at the dinner table. These two activities build your children's vocabulary, cements their learning and raises the level of success they will achieve at school.

I sincerely appreciate your help and your support. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns of any kind.

Counselor's Corner

This week at Van Alstyne Elementary School we have celebrated National Fire Prevention Week and learned about staying safe. We had first responders from Van Alstyne Fire Department show off their fire truck and equipment, as well as discussing appropriate times to dial 911, the importance of smoke alarms throughout homes, and making a family plan in case of an emergency. Safety Drill

We practiced our first safety drill in the new tornado wing today. Our students did a fantastic job moving to the shelter quickly and quietly. We were able to fit the entire student body and all staff members with room to spare. We are very proud of our students for doing so well on this first attempt.

Look how close we are getting to having 10 in a row! The students in that row will win the mystery prize!

The Golden Tray Awards

One class from each grade level has the opportunity to win the "Golden Tray" in the cafeteria each week on Friday. The class who has shown the best manners, cleaned up after themselves and followed the procedures correctly earns this award. This picture is Mrs. Cooper's class who earned extra recess time for the honor. The 3rd graders in Miss Landers's class have won the award two weeks in a row. Congrats to all of the Golden Tray winners we have had so far.
