Meadow Park News

Principal's Corner
As you may have seen in district announcements, this year our district is taking a close look at Middle School schedules and course offerings. In order to ensure that students at all 8 (and soon to be 9) middle schools have a similar experience, we are seeking feedback from staff and community in making a decision. Below, you will see an article regarding a Listening and Learning Session here at Meadow Park on February 6th at 6:30 pm in the library. At that session, I will be providing information on potential schedules and allowing our community to provide important feedback to us as we move forward. I hope to see many of you there!
We also have some upcoming events including our annual Hoops for Heart Staff vs Student Basketball game on 2/13 at 6 pm and Parent-Teacher Conferences on February 26th and 27th. Sign-ups for our conferences will go live sometime after February 3rd. I’ll send out more info before it goes live!
Make it a great week (and semester!),
Jared Freeman

Help Replenish the Meadow Park Food Pantry!
Dear Meadow Park Families,
Meadow Park will be doing a food drive for their own Pantry from January 22 to January 31st. We will be doing the food drive with a twist, making it BINGO style. If you are able to get a BINGO or even a blackout prizes will be awarded. Students will bring the items on their card to their advisory. Then the advisory teacher will initial the item that you brought. We hope to get your help and support by donating food to Meadow Park’s food pantry.
Common Middle School Experience: Family Listening & Learning Sessions
Please join us to learn more about the Beaverton School District’s efforts to create a common experience at all of our comprehensive middle schools. This effort includes middle school course offerings and schedules that are standardized across the District.
The Family Listening & Learning Sessions will be held at every middle school on Thursday, February 6, 2020 from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. We look forward to seeing you there!
The Importance of Sleep for Kids
Why is a good night’s rest important for kids? Did you know sleep is just as important as nutrition and exercise?
Sleep is an essential part of everyone’s routine and an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Studies have shown that kids who regularly get an adequate amount of sleep have improved attention, behavior, learning, memory, and overall mental and physical health. Not getting enough sleep can lead to high blood pressure, obesity and even depression.
The Academy of Pediatrics recommends the amount of sleep kids need, based on age:
Kids aged 3-5 years old: 10-13 hours per night
Kids aged 6-12 years old: 9-12 hours per night
Teens aged 13-18 years old: 8-10 hours per night
Tips for families to help kids get the recommended amount of sleep:
Establishing a consistent bedtime routine is important. The routine should ideally start at the same time every night. As soon as the sun goes down, start to “wind down” the household.
- Dim the lights
- Stop use of electronics/screens at least an hour before bed
- Limit caffeine
- Take a warm bath
- Do a quiet family activity such as reading a short book
- If your child wakes up during the night, walk them back to their room with as little commotion as possible
- Set a wake-up time and be consistent
What should parents do if none of this works?
If your child is having daytime sleepiness or behavior difficulties in school that you think might be linked to lack of sleep, you should definitely visit your pediatrician. It is not recommended giving your child any “sleep medications” without first consulting your doctor as many of these medications are not safe for kids.
7th Graders Try Driving Electric and Combustion Cars in Science Class!
By: Narra Pagtakhan, Tasiyah Ahmed, and Juliet Yoo
Students in Dr. Duncan’s 7th-grade science class have been learning about the impact of electric cars on the environment versus regular cars. A guest speaker named Joshua Kam, a former Meadow Park student, showed us how electric cars work, giving the students a presentation regarding the mechanisms of the electric and combustion cars. The students got to try out a model of these two types of cars, the electric being powered by batteries and the combustion car being powered by nitrous. We learned that the electric car died before the combustion car, but that the electric car is also more efficient and responsive, so everyone was requested to start on that. Overall, we had a fun science class, wrapping up our learning on force and motion. Watch the videos and take a look at the pictures for more!
