Amazing April!
April 20, 2018
Hooray for Warmer Weather!
We have began the process of rescheduling park days! This requires communication with the bus and scheduling within the school for transitional support. As soon as we know a specific date and time we will reach out. Thank you so much for your patience as we are all looking forward to returning to the park as soon as possible.
Reading
In guided reading, KA has been eagerly working on fluency (reading rate, phrasing, and intonation), retelling the story, and answering questions about problem/solution, character mental state. Students are working really hard to answer specifically How (do you know...) and why (did..), questions. We have also been keeping are lenses on the importance of self monitoring and self correcting.

How do we care for living things in an Urban Classroom?
Later we spoke about things that grow and we began reading stories about growth. Our most recent story was called City Green. Our big question this unit is "How do we care of living things in an urban classroom?" We will answer this question by experimenting with seeds, and recyclable materials! (Coming soon: we have a surprise on the way!)
Writing
KA first learned what a how to book is, and we studied master books. Then we learned how to make a puppet! Students loved learning how to make a puppet using a paper bag, they wrote the steps down on their own brainstorm papers, and during choice many students made their own puppets! After that we brainstormed our own how to books. Next week we begin writing these books!
It has been really interesting to see what KA would like to teach their friends to do: Draw a dog face/flower/animal, Back Flip, swim, tie shoes, make spaghetti, write a book, take care of a cat, make a paper dog..etc.
Espanol
¡Hola Familias de KA!
KA keeps doing an excellent job in Spanish. After the break, we started to learn about how we share the world and how we grow. We are learning new key words, es grande, es mediano, es pequeño (big, medium, small), to describe objects and shapes. We have been reading the books, Perro Grande, Perro pequeño, and Los tres osos. KA is looking forward to more adventures in Español, especially to learn the names of the animals and how they grow.
Exelente trabajo KA
Gracias,
Maestra Nivia
Music
Hello Kindergarten families!
Before spring break, Kindergarteners finished up a Train unit in music. They chanted train rhymes, sang train songs, created train dances, and played train games. The unit culminated with Kindergarteners drawing trains in various places, then performing journeys created out of a few of the drawings.
Currently, Kindergarteners are doing a unit on plants in music. Kindergarteners have been singing “Oats, Peas, Beans, and Barley Grow,” “Apple Tree,” and other imaginative songs about growing. Next week, Kindergarteners will create their own musical garden rows using seeds!
If you have any questions about music this year, or would like to share a song with me, please contact me at jkramer@brooklynprospect.org.
