The Magic in the Middle
Arcola Intermediate School, October 2019
October
In student advisory period we have had many discussions about what it truly means to be an Arcola student. How does the power of BE The One apply to us as we work to encourage, empower and inspire all students? Themes of responsibility, respect and safety rose to the top of our student discussions. Let's all work to BE the best we can BE!
We recently experienced an assembly on vaping and will be presented with many more topics as the year unfolds. As parents we need your help and support during this teenage path as it is not easy! We appreciate you working with us!

During the week of October 28th, students are participating in Red Ribbon Week® 2019 – this year’s theme is: “Send A Message. Stay Drug Free”. At school, students will engage in activities that promote a drug-free and healthy lifestyle. Please partner with us and discuss this message at home, at the dinner table, at family outings, and with friends and extended family. Ask your child about the pledge they signed and the information they received in Health class.
Our 7th Grade students participated in their first career lesson of the year focused on learning more about their learning styles. Students took a learning styles inventory in Naviance – ask them to show you their results! They were given some tips on how to use what they learned when they sit down and study for tests and quizzes and then came up with their own ideas on what might work for them.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, two-thirds of teenagers suffer from chronic sleep deprivation. Parents/guardians should discuss good "sleep hygiene" with their teens as we transition out of daylight savings time in early November. As parents/guardians, encourage your teens to have a regular bedtimes that allow for at least eight hours of sleep a night. Parents should also implement a "media curfew" of phone, computer, TV, and video game use after a certain time in the evening. As an old Irish proverb states, "A good laugh and a long sleep are the two best cures for anything."
The first marking period will come to a close on November 5th. If you have any concerns about how well your student is doing so far this year, please reach out to their counselor for help.
