Southport High School Core Beliefs
WHAT NOW?
For the past 18 weeks, I have written about our values and tried to get to the core of those words. At the start of the school year, we talked about owning our part of our culture. We can have a mission and values, but unless that mission is put into motion and lived each day in our actions and intentions, it is no more important than the paper it is written on. Our values are a portrait of a graduate, the epitome of what we want each student to walk away from Southport High School looking like. They are the traits we want to build within ourselves and our students so they are acted upon each day in a positive way. If everyone in our building acted upon the 18 "I can" statements, nothing could stand in the way of our success. So, as we wrap up the semester, I ask you to think back on the last 18 weeks, think about our mission and values and ask:
- What did I learn?
- What am I going to do about it?
Change requires action!
Be A Cardinal; Change lives: PUT A MISSION INTO MOTION

1-5-20 Resources
If you only have 1 minute this week read this:
This is taken from www.dailydiscipline.com written by Brian Kight. As educators, we can be really harsh on ourselves. We care about our kids and focus too often on the negative side. I found this short post on slowing down self-judgment beneficial. Hope you enjoy.
Simple steps to start slowing down self-judgment.
- See yourself as a work in progress. No matter how good or bad it gets, you’re never a finished product. Don’t skip past this bullet as “obvious”. You can’t afford to hustle past obvious things you’re not doing well.
- Accept that you are a mix of things that are working well and not working well. And you always will be. There are simply too many variables in life, emotions, relationships, dreams, opportunities, and randomness to ever get everything right. No one does, not even you.
- Don’t associate lack of judgment with a lack of awareness. You don’t need to judge yourself in order to know yourself. Be accountable for who you want to be, not critical of who you should be. Accountability takes responsibility through action while judgment just throws opinions and criticism.
If you have 5 minutes this week read this:
This is a good read about the importance of creating good study habits. There are some great connections in this article to work we have done in PD over the past couple of years. We all know our students need better study habits. This article provides some good resources to support students in improving those habits. But like anything else, if we want them to improve those skills, we must take the time to teach the skills. If they do not have the skills now, they are not just going to pick them up by chance.
"One of the best things we, as teachers, can do for our students is to instruct them on the basic constructs and limitations of memory and how to utilize more effective and efficient study skills."
If you have 20 minutes this week watch this:
Life Lesson from 100 Year-Olds. Nothing specific to take away from this video. I just appreciate the life perspective of three people who have lived into their 100s. WATCH NOW
