Causes of WWI

Why it all began....

Trouble Begins Brewing

The European powers had been bickering amonst themselves for a long time before WWI began.  They had adopted a policy of Militarism, or building up of armies. They created alliances in case a war broke out. They thought that their country was the best and others were inferior. This created a huge "bubble" that one incident could burst at any time.

The Assassination The Started The War

The Assassination of Franz Ferdinand

Arch Duke Ferdinand and his wife went on a trip to Serbia on June 28, 1914. The couple was killed by a Serbian nationalist named Gavrilo Princip while riding in their car. This outraged Austria-Hungary because Ferdinand was the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary. They Demanded an apology from Serbia.

Nationalism Causes War

Serbia refuses to apologize for the assassination of Ferdinand. Austria-Hungary wanted to declare war. Germany backed them. In response, Russia backed Serbia. When Austria and Germany declared war and used Belgium as a war route, it caused a chain reaction as European Allies called on one another plunging Europe into war.
