Weekly Update- February 9, 2017

Week at a Glance

Reading- I've started our winter round of BAS testing. We've also continued our discussion of cause/effect & comparing/contrasting. I love the way our writing unit ties reading skills into each lesson!

Math- We're crossing the finish line with Unit 4!! Yahoooo!!! I didn't anticipate it taking this long, but through our assessments I realized we needed to spend a lot more time on 2 step word problems and comparing fractions. Today we played a fun game with fractions called "Tic-Tac-Fracto."

Science- We started our E4Tech Unit on circuits. Students are loving it so far! We started by exploring the game "Operation" and investigating materials that conduct electricity and those that don't. In 4th grade students will learn a lot more about circuits, our focus this year is just using the circuits to identify whether energy is present.

Writing- We're continuing our informational writing unit and I introduced a rubric to students this week. Based on the rubric students looked at what they have so far and set goals, as well as celebrated parts of their writing they're proud of. We had so much to celebrate!! :)

MAP/OST Scores

MAP and OST scores will be going home in your child's red folder today. There is a letter attached explaining the scores you're seeing and what this means for the Third Grade Reading Guarantee.

If you have any questions/concerns please don't hesitate to reach out.

Genius Hour Presentations

We will plan on having our Genius Hour Presentations on Thursday, February 22nd, after school from 4:00-5:30 pm. A permission slip will go home soon that indicates your child can stay after school for these presentations.

**If your child has a prior commitment after school, there will be an opportunity for them to present Friday morning instead.**

Thank You!

A huge thank you to Carol Bahr for being our head room parent and organizing all of our class parties! Also, thank you to everyone who pitched in and donated items and/or their time to make our parties a success. The kiddos loved them and looked forward to each and every party.

Bridges Home Connection

Hi! Tonight you will see your child's Bridges "Home Connection" book coming home for units 1-4. I sent pieces of this home throughout unit 3. We are still working on Unit 4 so you could do any of the Unit 4 pages as practice.

If you are wondering why this is just now coming home it is because I wanted to teach the units and lessons before sending it home. Skill practice was included in the homework menus that have been coming home weekly.

Reminder: NO SCHOOL on Feb. 19th & 20th
