Have you ever wondered how hurricanes form of what the different categories are? Well you have come to the right place, because in this article we will you how hurricanes form, how they are categorized, and naming of the hurricanes. Then I will tell you about hurricane Ike, a very powerful hurricane in 2008.


First on our list is how hurricanes form. Did you know hurricanes that affect the United States usually start as a low pressure system off the coast of West Africa? Then the low pressure accumulates more warm water as it moves across the ocean. When the wind speeds get up to 74 mph it is officially a hurricane. Also did you know that hurricanes occur in the Atlantic Ocean? When a hurricane occurs in the Pacific Ocean it is called a typhoon.

Categories and Names

Next i will tell you about how they name hurricanes and how they categorize them. The categories are as follows: Category 1: 74-95 mph, Category 2: 96-110 mph, Category 3: 111-129 mph, Category 4: 130-156 mph, a category 5 hurricane is above 157 mph. That is how hurricanes are categorized now let's discuss how the are named. Used to only girl named were being chosen. Then later boy names started being chosen because men started to question why boy names were not chosen being used.

Hurricane Ike

Now I will tell you about the powerful Hurricane Ike. His wind speed was 174 mph! That is above a category 5 hurricane! Hurricane Ike killed 102 people and did 19.3 billion dollars worth of property damage! An interesting facta bout this hurricane is that it made landfall 5 times and almost made it to Canada before it lost all of its strenght. So npw I bet you can see how powerful this hurricane was.
