General Info

-Autism is a brain disorder that can make it difficult for individuals to communicate and interact with others

-Different parts of the brain fail to work together

-People with this condition have troubles relating to others

Causes/Method of Inheritance

-There is no single cause for autism, however it is widely accepted that it is caused by abnormalities in the structure or function

-Researchers are looking into other theories such as links between heredity, genetics and medical problems

-Tends to occur in individuals with certain medical conditions (fragile X syndrome, tuberous sclerosis, congenital rubella syndrome and untreated phenylketonuria)

-Some harmful substances injested during pregnancy have been associated with an increased risk for Autism

-Genetic component also increases the chance of having Autism (Ex: Environmental toxins like mercury)
