Principal's Message
Dear Parents, Guardians, and Community Members,
We are excited for the Art Walk event coming up with our new date of April 11th 6-8pm. This is going to be an event you do not want to miss. There will be over 200 pieces of student and class art pieces on display as well as activities to support artistic development and fun for students and adults. Mark your calendars and see you there! Thanks to Jasmin Bush and Jennifer Chauvin for their hours of organizing and planning.
School Attendance
We all appreciate that Vannoy is such a good school. Having your child attend school every day is important for your child to receive consistent instruction and practice. We do appreciate those of you that keep your child(ren) at home when they are sick, but please make sure to schedule appointments, vacations – trips to Disneyland, etc… during non-school days. Your child will benefit from going to a good school only if you bring them to school.
Family Vacations and Independent Study
Independent Study is for trips that are 5 days or more. These need to be submitted to the office at least 10 days before you plan to leave. Please contact the office or your child’s teacher regarding your trip.
Words of the Month – Do Your Best
Try your hardest! Don’t give up!
Have a conversation with your child about how important it is for them to “Do your best!” Progress not perfection.
SBAC – Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium
Assessment Window May 1 - May 19
The SBAC is our state standardized assessment for our 3rd - 5th grade students. This assessment will be given on Chrome books. Students will be given questions based on their correct/incorrect answers to help provide a more accuracy level of measurement.
Our teachers have been preparing for these assessments through their instruction in the classroom. This includes a shift in the way that students think, create thoughtful answers, and apply concepts. Please do not schedule appointments or trips during these dates.
CVEF Grant Recipient
Congratulations to our 2nd grade teacher Marya Wesner who received a CVEF grant for a chicken coop! She is our sponsoring teacher to add a chicken coop back near the garden. If you have any expertise – construction/building skills, please let us know. We are anticipating construction this summer in time for September chickens and eggs! Thank you to the Castro Valley Education Foundation for supporting our schools.

Homework Tip
Set Limits
Do you find that your child is rushing through their homework? Or maybe you have the opposite problem, you child is taking too long. Often times, students (and adults) struggle when there are not clear boundaries or end points. Setting time limits will help provide some structure for you. It will also create an end time and a target for students to reach. Depending upon the age of your child, decide together how much time they need to do their homework (daily reading will be a different time). When you decide the amount of time, set your timer for half the amount and work towards quality homework time until the timer goes off. Give your child a 5-10 minute break, and then you can start back up again – set the timer. Or maybe you can do half before dinner and half after dinner. If your child cannot finish at the end of the designated time, simply write your teacher a note.
The timer ultimately becomes your friend, because the timer is what starts, stops, and guides the homework session. It also helps you avoid entering a power struggle with your child that is frustrating for both parent and child. If needed, create a sticker or star chart where you can keep track of their successful sessions and they can earn a prize!
