Principal's Message

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Community Members,

We are excited for the Art Walk event coming up with our new date of April 11th 6-8pm. This is going to be an event you do not want to miss. There will be over 200 pieces of student and class art pieces on display as well as activities to support artistic development and fun for students and adults. Mark your calendars and see you there! Thanks to Jasmin Bush and Jennifer Chauvin for their hours of organizing and planning.

School Attendance

We all appreciate that Vannoy is such a good school. Having your child attend school every day is important for your child to receive consistent instruction and practice. We do appreciate those of you that keep your child(ren) at home when they are sick, but please make sure to schedule appointments, vacations – trips to Disneyland, etc… during non-school days. Your child will benefit from going to a good school only if you bring them to school.

Family Vacations and Independent Study

Independent Study is for trips that are 5 days or more. These need to be submitted to the office at least 10 days before you plan to leave. Please contact the office or your child’s teacher regarding your trip.

Words of the Month – Do Your Best

Try your hardest! Don’t give up!

Have a conversation with your child about how important it is for them to “Do your best!” Progress not perfection.

SBAC – Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium

Assessment Window May 1 - May 19

The SBAC is our state standardized assessment for our 3rd - 5th grade students. This assessment will be given on Chrome books. Students will be given questions based on their correct/incorrect answers to help provide a more accuracy level of measurement.

Our teachers have been preparing for these assessments through their instruction in the classroom. This includes a shift in the way that students think, create thoughtful answers, and apply concepts. Please do not schedule appointments or trips during these dates.

CVEF Grant Recipient

Congratulations to our 2nd grade teacher Marya Wesner who received a CVEF grant for a chicken coop! She is our sponsoring teacher to add a chicken coop back near the garden. If you have any expertise – construction/building skills, please let us know. We are anticipating construction this summer in time for September chickens and eggs! Thank you to the Castro Valley Education Foundation for supporting our schools.

Homework Tip

Set Limits

Do you find that your child is rushing through their homework? Or maybe you have the opposite problem, you child is taking too long. Often times, students (and adults) struggle when there are not clear boundaries or end points. Setting time limits will help provide some structure for you. It will also create an end time and a target for students to reach. Depending upon the age of your child, decide together how much time they need to do their homework (daily reading will be a different time). When you decide the amount of time, set your timer for half the amount and work towards quality homework time until the timer goes off. Give your child a 5-10 minute break, and then you can start back up again – set the timer. Or maybe you can do half before dinner and half after dinner. If your child cannot finish at the end of the designated time, simply write your teacher a note.

The timer ultimately becomes your friend, because the timer is what starts, stops, and guides the homework session. It also helps you avoid entering a power struggle with your child that is frustrating for both parent and child. If needed, create a sticker or star chart where you can keep track of their successful sessions and they can earn a prize!

Lego Robotics - We need volunteers!

We will be starting Lego Robotics right after Spring Break. This is a fun program for students to learn how to program and control their robots using Lego Mindstorms robot kits. This program is parent-run, so if you are interested, you will need to get your Volunteer Clearance competed before you start. The Lego Mindstorms kits are provided; there is a max of three students per team. Student signups will be coming out soon via Remind. Parent Volunteer students will be given priority. Please contact the office if you are interested.

Attn: 4th Grade Parents - Re: Instrumental Music Classes for 2017-2018

Please note that at the end of March your student brought home a packet regarding playing an instrument next school year. The paperwork requires all 4th graders in the Castro Valley Unified School District to return the permission slip whether or not they are playing an instrument next year.

The music staff needs to estimate how many instruments are needed and this will be your student's ONLY opportunity to sign up for instrumental music classes held during 5th grade in the fall. We offer band and string orchestra classes. The sign up packets for available instruments and other information have been sent home.

The forms are to be completed and returned as soon as possible - no later than 5/12/2017. Thank you.

Confidentiality at Vannoy

When you come into our office to sign in, if you see a student sitting in the office (especially if you know them well), please do NOT ask them "Why are you in the office? What's wrong? Are you sick?" etc. We want our students to feel that they have privacy when in the office. Our office staff have been trained in First Aid.

You may acknowledge them by saying 'hi' or 'I hope you feel better' but please do not offer advice on what they should do. Everyone means well but it can send mixed emotions and messages to a student.

We also ask that you refrain from texting/calling a parent to let them know that their child is sitting in the office. Thank you for your understanding.

California Accountability Model and School Dashboard

Rather than using a single numeric system of rating schools and districts as was the practice in the past with the Academic Performance Index (API), California Department of Education has developed a new system for evaluating schools and districts that includes multiple measures of student success. The new California School Dashboard (www.caschooldashboard.org) includes graphic representations of Literacy and Math test scores, high school graduation rates, English learner progress rates, and suspension rates for all students and for student subgroups. The Dashboard will soon also include additional rates for students' college and career readiness and attendance.

If you would like to have more information, please go to www.cv.k12.ca.us and then click on Accountability . . . it will then take you to the following link: http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/ac/cm/index.asp to read more about this.

Measure G Update

The CVUSD Measure G Implementation Plan developed after completing a needs assessment, a comprehensive Facilities Master Plan, and site specific timelines, was approved by the CVUSD Governing Board on December 19, 2016. The Measure G Implementation Plan is posted online at www.cv.k12.ca.us. The Castro Valley Unified School District is grateful to the voters in Castro Valley for approving Measure G, a $123 million General Obligation Bond, and is looking forward to construction projects scheduled to begin over the summer into the next few years throughout the district. Regular updates will be shared with the community through school newsletters, print media and online. Please feel free to contact Dr. Candi Clark at (510) 537-3000 for more information or if you have any questions.

Following the passage of Measure G, a Citizens' Bond Oversight Committee (CBOC) was formed on September 22, 2016. The CBOC meetings will be held at least quarterly and are open to the public.
