Choir & Orchestra Perform at SHS
Choir and orchestra students enjoyed performing with their community peers in a recent SHS consortium concerts.
The consortium festivals give students a positive exposure to high school performing by introducing them to the Stevenson instructors and choir/orchestra members who welcome them and illustrate the ways in which students can include chorus/orchestra in their academic, musical, and social lives.
STEAM Conference
District 103 children were excited and engaged during the Learning Fund Foundation STEAM Conference that took place on Wednesday. The foundation’s Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math (STEAM) event provided 180 students the opportunity to participate in activities such as exploring the invisible world of electricity and magnetism, learning about the physics of catapults, building video games, and creating obstacle courses for Sphero robots.
"We at the Learning Fund Foundation are committed to offering authentic and engaging hands-on learning experiences to our students," said Michele Schaapveld, President of the Learning Fund Foundation. "Our goal is for the students to leave feeling inspired to pursue a career in a STEAM field," she said. Please visit the D103 Facebook page for pictures of the event.
The Foundation thanks its conference sponsors. Please visit the Foundation website for a list of sponsors. The PTO Camp and Adventure Fair was well attended by parents and offered them information about local summer camps and programs. Please visit the PTO's website for more on the camp representatives.
Heart Rate Monitors
Students in DW’s Physical Education classes are working out and they’re doing it with enthusiasm now that they can self monitor their heart rate thanks to donations from the PTO’s Links 2 Learning Program for Heart Zones heart rate monitors. Watch the students in action in this fitness video.
“The entire PE department has embedded technology that is engaging, rigorous and relevant, and can quantify how students are progressing physically,” principal Michelle Blackley shared with the board of education during a recent physical education presentation on the Heart Zones Monitor program.
PE Teacher Mike Jerzyk added, “This program is a great way for students to visually see what it means to work hard and get their heart rate up. While students work out they are monitoring their vigorous activity to achieve 120-160 heart rate beats per minute.” Please visit the school's website for the entire article on Healthy Hearts.
