Marian Central Catholic High School Faculty Newsletter
January 4, 2019
We hope all of you have had a restful and joyful Christmas and New Year's break!
A big thanks to all of the Secret Santa participants this year. It was a fun way to welcome in the holidays and show a little Christmas joy to each other!
Right after Christmas, ComEd came in and replaced one of our transformers and the maintenance crew has been busy cleaning the building. Thanks to the entire maintenance team for working so hard all year to keep our school clean and running efficiently!
As we left for break back on December 21, most of the teachers had already completed their grade meeting with administration. Although there are several students who have outstanding exams due to a variety of reasons, many of them have been making them up over the three days that the office was open during break. If you have a student who needed to make up an exam, you may find the completed exam in your mailbox when you return. Please grade the exam and update Rediker, including re-submitting, then make sure that you contact Ms. Novy via email and/or the grade change form to make sure that everything has been completed.
On Dec. 27, Marian hosted the Diocesan Priests vs Seminarian Volleyball and Basketball games! It was a good time for all who came! Check out the photos below, and try to plan to come out and watch next year!
Looking ahead...
Welcome to 2019 and second semester! Fresh starts, new curricular topics, and even a few new faces! Here's to a productive, positive, and blessed second semester!
If you have not already had your grade meeting with Ms. Novy, you should be scheduled to meet with her by 3:30 pm on Monday. If you had students who needed to make up exams over break, please check your mailboxes, grade them, and complete the student's semester grade in the portal. The portal will remain closed to the students and parents until Friday at 3:00 pm, so you can still go in and make those changes. Just remember that if you make any changes after your grade meeting with Ms. Novy has already occurred, please drop an email indicating that change to dnovy@marian.com so I can close your grade paperwork on my end. If a grade changes after Friday, Jan. 11 at 3pm, then you must use and submit the grade change form provided in the Exam Procedures packet.
A helpful reminder as we step into a new semester... this is a great time to refresh your expectations in your classroom, make sure both the Marian Central and your own classroom policies and procedures are clear to students, as well as the consequences. For seniors in particular, their behavior, attendance, and grades have a bigger impact coming into second semester as they are all working towards second semester exam exemptions. Please click here to review the expectations of this privilage so you can answer any questions a senior might have on their ability to qualify within your class.
Have a wonderful week... and welcome back!

DUAL CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES~
The academic expectations you set in your classroom are already so high... did you ever think that they might be to the level of McHenry County College (MCC) expectations?
The minimum qualifications for a high school teacher to teach a dual credit course have changed. According to the Illinois Dual Credit Quality Act, a high school instructor now just needs a minimum of a Master’s Degree with 18 graduate hours appropriate to the academic field of study or discipline in which they are teaching. For example, if a teacher has a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction or Secondary Education, and has at least 18 graduate credit hours in their subject area (ie: Biology) this teacher would qualify to teach Bio157 - Fundimentals of Biology as a dual credit class in conjunction with MCC.
Are you qualified?
Are you interested in finding out more about this? Click here to review in more detail what the Dual Credit program is all about.
If interested in seeing what the program might look like for your courses here at Marian, please contact Ms. Novy to discuss this great opportunity for you and, especially, for our students!
