Cyclospora Cayetanesis

  • Microscopic Parasite
  • Protazoan Parasite
  • Causes disease in humans and primates.

How is it spread?

Can be spread through food and water that has been contaminated with fecal matter.

Symptoms

  • Watery diarrhea (Explosive Diarrhea)
  • Bloating, gas, stomach cramps
  • Loss of appetite
  • Low grade fever
  • Fatigue

Symptoms appear within one week of infection.

Treatment

  • Only be identified with a stool sample
  • Treated with antibiotics

History

  • Cyclospora was first identified in North America in 1977 from contaminated water.
  • An outbreak occurred in the early 1990's when people began becoming infected with these flu-like symptoms in the early 1990's. The large amounts of cyclospora being found in U.S. residents was found to come from raspberries that has been contaminated with fecal matter.

Prevention

  • Drinking Bottled water or boiled water when traveling.
  • Avoid fresh produce / wash fruits and vegetables.
