The Beginning

  • The first epidemic outbreak of whooping cough was described in the 16th century.
  • Then Pertussis was discovered in 1906 by Jules Bordet and Octave Gengou.
  • It was not identified as Pertussis until 1906.
  • Pertussis means intense cough in Latin.

Vaccine

  • This disease is treated with a vaccine called (DTAP) dipheria, tetanus and pertussis. The CDC suggests the vaccine is givin at two, four, six and 15-18 months.
  • Also, four to six years and 11 to 12 years should receive a booster.
  • One of the antibiotics used to treat pertussis is azithromycin also known as zithromax.
  • The antibiotics lessen the impact of the transmission.
