Burlingame Intermediate School
Thursday, August 25, 2022 - First Day of School

Dear BIS Family and Friends,
Math/Accelerated Math
If you did not get Accelerated Math in 6th or 7th grade, and you want your child in this class, email us ONLY, if you haven't emailed us before today. We will get to your students schedule as soon as we can and email you with an updated schedule. Delayed start will not affect your child's grade.
Eighth graders that opted to take the independent study Algebra will soon see this on their schedule.
Parent Portal
Emails for you to sign-in or create an account were sent out last night. It will have the new URL and login information for you with your students' unique code so you can link them to your account. If you need assistance, once we finish addressing student schedules we can help. Please be patient.
We are so excited your children are back at school, as I am sure you are too! 😀
Warmly,
Erica Gilbert, Principal
Jermaine Williams, Asst. Principal
Tony Tsujisaka, Asst. Principal

Staff Update
Most of the teachers we brought on are experienced teachers from other districts. They are new to BIS, but bring a wealth of knowledge.
6th Grade: Melissa Plageman, Beth Cutright, Rick Peskett, Ms. Yen is on Maternity Leave through the first Trimester, her class will be covered by Cynthia Bringas who we have worked with throughout the district and brings many years of experience.
7th Grade: Austin Doucette, Jodie Reynosa, Jennifer Marty, Shoko Nagami (6-8)
8th Grade: Erika Leydig, Celeste Chain, Lee Lee, Vanessa Stubbs (6-8), and Andrew Ackers
Unfortunately, Mr. Osberg will be out for the next 3 to 4 weeks and we are excited to have Mr. Lazarus cover his classes until his return.
If you have any questions, please let us know.

District Nurses
The district has also contracted with a new nurse. Her name is Janet Westlund. She comes with over 25 years nursing experience and will be partnering with Nurse Rosie to ensure students are screened and healthy.
You can contact them at nurse@burlingameschools.org.

Masks
I am sure you have seen recent communications from the Superintendent that masking is still strongly recommended indoors by our county for students and staff. At BIS, though not required, masks are encouraged to be worn indoors for students and staff who have been exposed to Covid.
Quarantine/Isolation
We do not have a requirement for quarantine for students who have been exposed to Covid. We encourage mask wearing in cases where students have been knowingly exposed, but this is not a mandate.
Students who test positive for Covid must be kept at home for a minimum of 5 days. They may return to campus after a 5 day isolation period if they test negative for Covid, do not have a fever, and their symptoms are improving. For students who do not test negative after the 5 day isolation, they must continue isolation until they either test negative, or 10 days from symptom onset have elapsed.
Testing
We will not be offering testing on campus this year. We are instead asking families to follow recommendations for testing after an exposure and complete the testing at home. We are able to provide testing kits to families to do the testing at home. Please contact the school office if you need a home testing kit following receipt of an exposure notice.
Communication
We will be sending a general exposure notice (just like we do for Strep Throat and other transmissible conditions) to classes where there has been a case, but we will not be sending a general school-wide exposure notice.
It is very important that families do not send their children to school if they are sick. Please do not send your child to school if they have a fever, if they have vomited within the last 24 hours, or if they are exhibiting any Covid-related symptoms.
Please be sure that your child has been fever free for at least 24 hours without fever reducing medication.
We appreciate your help in keeping our staff and students healthy this year.
For absences, please email BISAttendance@burlingameschools.org
