Student Shout Out!!
Milton High School senior Daniel Steinberg has the distinct honor of having an article he wrote published in the Concord Review, a quarterly journal that publishes academic research papers of secondary students. This prestigious organization has published student essays and articles from around the world.
Daniel’s article addresses the resilience of the Korean people through a troublesome stretch of their history, from Japanese colonialism through a series of totalitarian Korean dictators who sought to limit the freedoms of the Korean people. According to Daniel, “Instilled in Korean culture is a potent persistence, a sense of profound resentment against unjust power known as Han. Han has no direct translation in the English language, it is a sentiment unique to those of Korea.” Daniel writes about the resilience of the Korean people throughout a tumultuous time in their history, and states, “throughout such fierce turmoil, the incandescent blaze of Han was inextinguishable, and the democratic will of the people was undying.”
There is a reason why Daniel chose this topic: it is near to his heart. His grandparents are from Korea, and Daniel grew up hearing the stories of their own experiences. Daniel captured their experiences - and the experiences of many others - in his article. His work is truly an account of history as well as a family treasure.

2022-2023 MCAS State Assessment
On September 19th, the MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) publicly released the MCAS assessment data for the 2023 test administration. MCAS data for the district and schools are available on the DESE website, and individual student MCAS reports will be mailed home to families after we receive them from DESE (expected by September 29th).
This year is the first time since 2019 that DESE will report full accountability determinations for schools and districts, including overall accountability classification, percent progress towards targets, and school and student group accountability percentiles. Overall, Milton is meeting or exceeding, or making substantial progress toward recovery targets set by the state at all our schools.
We are proud of the hard work of our students, staff, and families and remain focused on teaching and learning and preparing all our students to advance academically, to be well social emotionally, and to have equitable access to opportunities that support their growth and development.
Please read the full MCAS Executive Summary here.

Group Guidance
Group Guidance lessons have begun! All seniors have had their first Group Guidance lesson for the year. In this session they reviewed the college application procedure at MHS.
Freshmen have also seen their counselors during advisory, and their first Group Guidance lesson focused on getting to know School Counseling, MHS, and how to make the most of your freshman year.
Group Guidance for Sophomores and Juniors will start in November. Students are always able to make appointments with their counselors by emailing them or stopping into 206, the School Counseling suite.
A Message from the MHS PTO
Welcome back, MHS families!
The MHS PTO is a small group of parents and guardians who plan 5-6 staff appreciation events throughout the year - a welcome back lunch, dinner during parent teacher conferences, holiday treats, gift cards, etc. The MHS teachers and staff do so much for our kids and these small tokens of appreciation are a way for us to say a collective thank you.
There are two ways to be a part of and volunteer with MHS PTO - time and money.
- If you can help with one staff appreciation event this year (a one-time, 2-3 hour commitment), please email Jess Heaton at jrheaton04@yahoo.com to help with an event that works for your schedule.
- If you are able, donations can be made online at this link or by dropping a check made out to the MHS PTO at the front office. Parent donations are the only funding source for the PTO. Your donation goes directly to these teacher appreciation events.
Thank you so much for your support of the MHS staff. Wishing you and your family a great school year!
Michelle Cardoza, Stephanie O’Keefe, and Jess Heaton
