Benchwarmers
A benchwarmer is someone who rarely plays but is still there for the team to encourage them to play harder. Sitting on the bench can be a very thrilling experience...watching your teammates batting it out against the other team to win. It can also be very boring to just sit on the bench when there is no action in the game, sometimes wondering when it will be your time to finally go in and play and get off the bench. Maybe you don't help much on the court, but you help a lot emotionally. One Friday, a game day, I was sitting on the bench, watching a very important game that we needed to win to go to district playoffs. I was on the bench cheering my team in and the last minute of the fourth quarter; we are up by ten and I went in. I got the ball, lost it, then recovered it with seconds on the clock. I ran from defenders and shot a buzzer beater to end the game on a good note. The crowd was cheering happily about the win we got and the shot I made. It felt amazing to make the shot. It is a great memory from basketball and I am excited for the more memories to come with my team.

Student Spotlight: Aden Aquiso
Eighth grader, Aden Aquiso was chosen for student spotlight this month for his leadership skills. Aden is a very outgoing student and he pushes others to do their best. Aden thinks that he's a good leader because he’s not shy and he’s sees that people can do better...but they just lack confidence and they need a little push. Aden enjoys hunting, fishing, and sports. Aden’s favorite thing about school is seeing his friends, going to P.E. and sports. Aden says that his parents push him to do his best and he is most proud of his grades this year.
Way to go, Raider!
Senior Vicky Ayala
Translation provided by Mrs. Burk: Vicky Ayala's senior project is about teaching junior high girls how to use makeup and fix their hair. She will also volunteer to do these things for students attending the 8th Grade Grad dance. The most difficult parts of the project for Vicky were setting the date and getting parent permission for the girls to participate. Vicky believes that this project will help girls that wish to be better at doing makeup in the future. It might also inspire these girls to make money in independent business. Vicky's mentor is Zoey Ramirez, a hair stylist and makeup artist in Glenn's Ferry.
Senior Martin Gomez
Martin Gomez is a Rimrock Senior who was inspired to go forward with his senior project, which is shadowing an athletic trainer. He saw how people, especially his teammates, get hurt during games which lead him to do his project...which would take four to five months to finish. One of his job shadowings taught him more about being an athletic trainer, which would prepare for his college life. Martin is hoping to gain a lot of knowledge of what it means to be an athletic trainer and what it takes to become the best he can become.
Senior Ray Draper
Ray has been thinking about his senior project since the beginning of the school year and hopes to gain great knowledge on time management skills through the course of his project. He will be creating a shed for our football team; this shed will protect the team from the weather. Ray plans on taking all Spring break to work on his project, due to the cement that is going to be poured as the base. Not only will the shed protect the players, but Ray is also building this to promote the sport and to show how important physical health is to our players.
Senior Allison Hall
Ally Hall will be decorating the restrooms at Rimrock. Ally Hall came up with the idea for her project with the help of Ms.Metcalf, our school counselor. Ms. Metcalf showed Ally different pictures of bathrooms being decorated by students and Ally fell in love with the idea. She told me that the restrooms are “so drab and lack color and creativity." Her interest in art inspired her to continue with her plan. Ally’s project will take a week with the help of her mom (and friends) who have a lot of experience with painting houses.. Ally hopes to gain time management skills and to learn the different rules of art from her mentor.
Rimrock FFA Update
FFA has had several events so far this year. I talked to freshman Hailee Meyers about some of these events.
This year, FFA has went to a 212/260 event in Garden City and a dairy judging event in Elmore County. They also went to the high school in Meridian to take a greenhand knowledge test. FFA also has trips planned for this summer. They are going to Moscow at the beginning of the summer. They also plan to go to an SLC event in Twin Falls.
Hailee said her favorite FFA memory is when FFA went to the 212/260 event in Garden City. She said it was fun because, “I met a lot of really fun people and got to do a lot of really fun activities.”
We don't often see their blue coats on campus, but FFA stays busy.
Girls Basketball Districts and State
This season the Rimrock Girls Basketball team has had a very successful run, finishing first in their conference and second in the district. The Lady Raiders fought a hard battle at districts against their rivals, the Notus Pirates, who the Raiders had already beaten twice this season. Unfortunately, the Raiders lost 48-53. They then had an opportunity to play in the state tournament at Columbia High against Lapwai.
The day of the state tournament, I asked a few players how they felt about competing at the state level and what their thoughts were as they prepared throughout the day for the big game. Maddie Macmillan, Taylor Magers, and Sintia Varela all said that they were really nervous to play but Sintia was also excited. The whole team looked forward to see what the outcome was for these games and were determined to play their hardest and come out with a win.
The Lady Raiders played hard against Lapwai the first game and ended that day with a rough loss of 78-30. The Raiders kept their spirits up as they went into the second day to compete against Grace. The Lady Raiders battled hard to keep up with them but fell short as the score ended at 64 to 30. They came in 7th in the state for the 1AD1 division. The Raiders look forward to next year's season and hope do even better then they did this year.
Good Luck to our Lady Raiders!!
Journalism Class
Journalism it is a mentally challenging class, but it is fun at the same time. You will have a lot of fun building the yearbook. You also do these articles...they are pretty hard to do, but if you make it into the newspaper, it is pretty cool. You have one article every month, and sometimes you just don't want to do it. However, once you get into it, you will have a blast. There is a lot that goes into one article, and once you finally get into it, you will be really excited on what you did. If you do something really good in your article, it will go in the Rimrock newspaper, The Rock, and that is a good feeling when it gets put in there.

Translation provided by Mrs. Burk: In Greek mythology, a hero is someone that possesses super-human abilities. They always rise to the occasion for the betterment of the common good, they are full of virtue and, because of this, they are worthy of respect. But this day and age, there are people without super-human abilities making a difference. They sacrifice themselves and their time for the good of others and they will give everything to help. Firefighters and doctors are considered modern heroes because they offer to do what others would not by going into fires and saving lives. There are many types of heroes such as people who want to change a country and encourage citizens and government make it a better country. There are also those who teach others to learn from their mistakes and try to make the world better. There are also those who care for the environment. We can all be heroes. We all have the capacity to be heroes. We can be as good as we want to be. It does not matter if it is in school, in your town, in your country or even that it changes the world, but we have to contribute our grain of sand to make the difference and make it a better world.
Excuses
You have probably made many excuses for various reasons; for instance being late for work or school, not turning assignments in, or not doing a chore. Here are some examples of creative excuses for future reference. Most common excuses Alarm didn’t go off: a bizarre add on to this one is the water leaked through the roof and ruined the alarm Looking for keys: dog swallowed keys The weather: the rain flooded the roads Locked indoors: kids locked parents inside Stuck in traffic: traffic jams 2. Students excuses Dog ate my homework: who hasn’t used this excuse before? My coffee was too hot: only coffee lovers know this is true Hair brush got stuck in hair: evidently this happens more often than previously thought 3. Best excuses b. “Please excuse my son. He will be out next week slaughtering goats for his manhood ritual. Thank you!”
a. Driveway disappeared: If it snows or rains where you live this is probably your best excuse of all
The $5 Date
Taking your significant other out on a date can be expensive...especially around this time. You can take your significant other out on a meaningful and not so expensive date. You can go out and take a walk and watch the sun set. You can go out and get a coffee and just sit down and talk. There are many places that have really good food for a very low cost. You don't have to go out to a very expensive restaurant. You could also go out on a bike ride, grab some ice cream, get a $5 pizza, or star gaze at night. There are so many things you can do for date and not be so expensive but still very meaningful.
