HMS Bearcat Bulletin

December 2017

A Note from Ms. Buschmann

The first thought many kids have about the holidays is about presents and what they are going to get. At HMS, I am very proud that many of our kids are also thinking about others. You will see pictures below of our contributions to the Cops for Kids food drive; we collected over 750 items. Students collected over $135 to contribute the "Beyond the Elf on the Shelf" random acts of kindness boxes, they made placemats for the nursing homes at Thanksgiving, and are making cards for veterans who are hospitalized over the holidays.

Thank you for your support of these efforts and for raising such caring and generous kids. I hope you are able to share some time with your students over the break and enjoy your holidays.

Student of the Month

For the month of November, we recognized and celebrated students who exhibit the character trait of Honesty. It is not always easy to be truthful, but these kids rise to the challenge. Congratulations to all of the nominees.

Scholastic Book Fair

Thank you for your support of the Scholastic Book Fair this October. The reward dollars that we earn are used for purchasing additional books and technology items. This year we sold 501 books which accounts for 90115 minutes of reading by our students.

Thank You Moore Gear

Moore Gear celebrated their 30th anniversary by making donations to the area schools and the hospital. With this donation, we were able to purchase a class set of Ozobot Evos. They will be housed in the MakerSpace and have already been put to use as the 6th-grade students explore computer coding and robotics with them. Coding teaches students critical thinking and logic and they have had to use communication skills, cooperation, and a lot of patience in the process of programming.

School-Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (SW-PBIS or PBIS)

The PBIS leadership team continues to develop lessons and plans for the launch of School-Wide Positive Behavior Supports and Interventions next school year. This will include a “PBIS Boot Camp” for kids at the beginning of the year to incorporate many lessons as well as some fun centered around expectations and teaching behaviors. They are also reviewing daily procedures to make sure we are being as consistent and proactive as possible.

HMS Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA)

FCCLA has spent a good portion of this semester serving the community and our school. Members provided the character lesson at Student of the Month Assemblies in September and October. They also organized and manned the concession stand for fall intramurals and donated the profits to Community Christmas and created a miniature Christmas tree for the Chamber of Commerce's decorating contest. Their theme for the tree was Mele Kalikimaka (Hawaiian Christmas Song). The trees will be on display at the Hofgarten December 9 and 10 and then be donated to the residents of the local nursing homes and assisted-living facilities and the Hermann Area District Hospital.

Parent Advisory Committee

The Parent Advisory Committee met on November 17. This committee is open to all parents of HMS students. Thank you to those of you that were able to make it to the meeting. For those of you that were not available, a few bullet points of discussion are included below. The next meeting will be on Thursday, February 15 at 6:30 pm.

Highlights from the Meeting:

  • Financial Report- Consensus was that support for teacher appreciation, 8th-grade promotion, and technology purchases were still committee priorities
  • No additional fundraisers are wanted, in fact, some parents might be interested in a "buyout" option at the beginning of the year to not have to participate in the fundraising
  • Parents and teachers found the student involvement in conferences helpful and suggested that goal sheets, like those used at the conferences, be sent home more often. Concerns about the amount of time required all in one night, especially with multiple children in multiple buildings, were voiced.
  • Reviews from special events last year, the Read in Day and Student Showcase, were favorable. Parents expressed interest in having the Science Fair and Enrichment showcase incorporated into that evening.

Movie Night at Hermann Elementary

All Middle School students are invited to attend a movie night sponsored by the Gasconade County R-1 Title 1 Program. See the flyer below.
