A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Falcon Families,

Week 2 of 2021 is beginning and it’s been great to get to see some of your students in classes learning and engaging in some critical thinking with their classmates! Even in the dark moments of last week, it was uplifting to hear our students voices and be able to read some of their thoughts during activities. I am truly impressed with our students!

This week is the third Padres Unidos meeting for Latino parents! This has been a growing group and all are welcome! We will be meeting from 6-7 pm Monday, January 11.

This week is also picture retakes. Dorian will be here from 9-11:30 am on Wednesday January 13. I apologize for the quick turn around with this information, but we had limited choices on times and dates, and wanted to ensure students had an opportunity to get their pictures taken for the first time or retake their fall pictures. These are the photos that will go in the yearbook (yes! There will be a yearbook!) so please try to make it if you can!

I’m sure you all saw the message from the superintendent about the return to school plans. If you didn’t, the core of the message is that we’re still in a holding pattern until we have more information. I know how frustrating this can be. My four boys want nothing more than to be in school with their friends and teachers! The slow pace for returning to school is to ensure that we can keep staff and students safe. If we bring people back too quickly and without proper PPE and sanitation protocols, we risk sending everyone home just as quickly as we got them back. There has been a lot of conversation about this plan on social media, email, and over the phone. Please know that we’re working within guidelines and also want to return when it is safe. The best thing all of us can do right now is reassure our students that we’ll get through this and also practice safety protocols as outlined by the CDC.

At the end of January, teachers will be putting in grades for the first semester. There are few marks that teachers have been encouraged to use that I would like to explain. A grade of ‘“I” means incomplete. This means that students have an opportunity to have the grade change via a plan agreed upon by both the teacher and student. This means the student is really close to showing they’re proficient in a standard but they need to do a little bit more to show that. A grade of an “N” means no grade. This means the student has not shown enough evidence for a teacher to give them a grade. This will be used to students who have not engaged or have engaged very little. This is a great time to check ParentVue and Canvas for parents to see how your child is progressing! Please let us know if you have questions about this.

We have heard from a few parents that they would like some help around using Canvas and ParentVue. We’ve created a form to help us assess the topics that are most important to you and also to see what times would be useful for parents. Please take a moment and fill out this very short survey. We’ll be in communication soon about dates for sessions and topics.

As always, please feel free to reach out with questions or concerns and kelly_cox@beaverton.k12.or.us Also - let me know about the good stuff! I love passing on your kudos and positive comments to our staff who are working very hard right now!

Familias Falcon,

Did you make it to picture day but not like your school photo? Well, you are in luck! Next Wednesday, January 13th from 9:00am to 11:30am we are offering a picture retake on our campus. Entry for this picture opportunity will be at the back parking lot doors. Cars can drop off students who will enter the building through the back door. Important Attendance Note: Students may not call in their absences on the attendance line, it must be the parent or guardian. Same with email, the student can notify the teacher that they will be missing a class, but the parent/guardian must call the attendance line 503-356-2601 to notify attendance of the excused absence.

Unlike last spring, student attendance will count during Comprehensive Distance Learning. Please read the following guidance on how attendance will be tracked:

  • Teachers will take student attendance daily. Attendance may be counted in a variety of ways to accommodate families who may need to access instruction during different times of the day.

    • Attending a live teacher-led session

    • Watching a teacher-recorded video

    • Interacting with a teacher via email

    • Posting completed coursework online

  • Parent/guardian notifications will be sent out at approximately 5 p.m. each day if students haven’t engaged in their school work and have been marked as absent.

  • Each morning, teachers will access an attendance report and will reconcile any absences from the previous day with any new evidence of engagement during the evening.

Please call the attendance line at 503-356-2601 if your student will be missing school due to illness or medical appointments.
