Roadrunner Review
August 2021
A letter from Mrs. Durgey
It has been an amazing first full week at Riggs. I am in awe of your children. Their spirit and zest for learning is infectious. I have loved listening to all of their stories about their summer and the exciting things they are doing currently. Below you will find a link to our current Covid safety plan and protocols for any positive cases. Also, in this week's newsletter you will find a few important reminders about arrival and dismissal procedures, as well as an exciting opportunity for our older students. We are all so very grateful for your patience and partnership as we navigate the first few weeks. In the short time we have been back our students have already started to master routines for the classroom and outside areas. If you have any questions or concerns I encourage you to email your child's teacher and or the front office. We will help as best we can for all situations. This is going to be a fantastic year!
Warmly,
Jamie Durgey, Principal
Introducing Mrs. Sands - Dean of Students
Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year, Riggs Families! I am thrilled to be part of such an amazing group of teachers and staff. It has been such fun getting to know your Roadrunners so far this year. The Riggs Staff has been working diligently these first couple of weeks of school to get students into a new routine and to build strong relationships. Mrs. Durgey and I have enjoyed spending time greeting students before school, in the cafeteria at lunch, on the playground, and in classrooms. We have been busy!
Allow me to tell you a little bit more about myself. I grew up in the Monterey Bay Area and moved to Arizona for college to escape the fog! I graduated from the University of Arizona and moved to the Phoenix area to begin my teaching career in 2002. I taught fourth grade in Tempe for ten years and received my master's degree in curriculum and instruction along with a reading endorsement from ASU. I was fortunate to be offered a job in CUSD teaching fifth grade when my oldest son, who's now a freshman at Perry, started kindergarten. After teaching fifth grade for two years, I moved to second grade where I remained for the rest of my teaching career. My passion has always been learning, and I was lucky enough to have incredible site leaders who've urged me to go into administration which is why I received my master's degree in educational leadership from NAU. My husband and I live in Gilbert and have two boys whom both attend schools in CUSD. I look forward to fostering positive relationships with you and your students here at Riggs! ❤️Mrs. Sands
Arrival/Dismissal
A few reminders.
1. Dogs are not allowed on campus.
2. Please do NOT drop students off near the crosswalk. This is very dangerous for everyone.
3. There are no left turns into the school unless the signs are gone.
4. Please keep your car tag visible until your student is in your car. This helps when we call but also which student goes with each car.
Safety Patrol
CURRENT SAFETY GUIDELINES
The link below contains an outline of CUSD's current mitigation strategies in effect for the 2021-22 school year. Also, I included the dashboard as well. For anyone that is new or was online last year I want to let you know what to expect when a positive case occurs on campus.
First, please notify both our health assistant, Christine Munsell and myself as soon as you get your results. This is important so that we can get confirmation from the county. Once our district health director confirms the positive case with the county, I begin notifying anyone deemed to have had close contact with the student that tested positive. Currently, close contact is being defined as being less than 3 feet from someone for 15 minutes or more in a 24 hour period (cumulatively). I will personally contact you if your child was in close contact and review quarantining procedures. This is only recommended at the moment and not required as long as a student doesn’t have any symptoms. After all close contacts have been notified, a general exposure letter is sent to the class or classes affected with the guidance to monitor your student for any symptoms over the next 10 days. Just a disclaimer, last year taught us that things can change depending on the situation around us. I feel very confident in our staff and community to take these precautions seriously and respond appropriately as safety is our top priority.
Don't Forget to Complete
Emergency Card
Be sure to log into your parent portal account and update your emergency contact information and or address if you recently moved. If you need to add anyone to your non household list for pick up purposes please do so as we have to check ID's and they have to be on the list.
Student Handbook
Parents be sure to review the handbook with your students in the coming days/week. We will be highlighting some of the key components here at school as well to ensure a success year. There is a page that needs to be signed and returned to your homeroom teacher indicating you have read it. I have attached both a pdf of the handbook and the signature page here for your convenience.
Medication
If your child requires daily or as needed medication to be administered by our health assistant, Ms. Chrissy, be sure to get the proper paperwork filled out and on file here in the health office. They are attached as well here for you to complete. You can email them to munsell.christine@cusd80.com or drop them off in the health office.
Two thumbs up for a great first day!
Orange you glad it is lunch time?
These Roadrunners love their school!
