A Message From Your Principal
Summer Greetings,
The 2022-2023 school year is quickly approaching and the excitement is growing! You will soon be receiving a back-to-school letter in the mail with details about the year and important dates- be on the look out!
Back-to-School night is August 11th from 5:00-6:30.
Included in this message is a recommended school supply list. These supplies are NOT required but have proven to support our teachers and a smooth learning experience for each of our learners! You can bring these supplies to Back-to-School night or on the first day of school.
We are also still looking to fill several staff openings at Adams. We work very hard to make this the best place to be, and would love to welcome a positive person to work alongside! We can be flexible with many different schedules! Please access these applications using the links below.
Can't commit to a daily position, but still want to help? Use the link below to apply as a volunteer! Completing this application will allow you to volunteer in the classroom, lunchroom, recess, attend field trips, and be part of many fun learning experiences with your child and our Adams students. We are excited to welcome back many volunteers into our building!
Know any exceptional people you'd like to see at Adams? Please pass the word on for them to apply!
We will be back in the school office on August 1st. If you should need assistance before that date, please reach out to me through email.

Return to Learn 2022-2023
Back to School Plan for 2022-23
We are so excited for the 2022-2023 school year to begin! Last year continued to pose unique challenges as we transitioned back to full in-person learning. We were all hopeful for a return to some normalcy. The reality was the effects of the pandemic continued to resound in our school and community. This year, we have established a back-to-school plan with the importance of Return to Learn. Our intention for Return to Learn is to reestablish boundaries and structures for a successful academic school year. Throughout the 2021-2022 school year, teachers and administrators identified some concerns that we want to proactively address in this year’s plan.
Concerns (The Why)
- We recognize boundaries have been blurred (engagement, attendance, completion of assignments, cell phone and technology usage, school vs home expectations, etc.) due to the pandemic
- Many students are struggling emotionally, mentally and socially
- Many people in our school community have been in prolonged survival mode throughout this pandemic.
Return to Learn Solutions
This summer, school members worked as a team to brainstorm issues, concerns and solutions, in order to continue our Adams Mission. The pandemic has taken its toll on all of us and we have identified the following areas to focus on and included each stakeholder's role in supporting our Return to Learn theme.
This includes:
- Engagement: Students will be engaged during class from bell to bell; prepared for learning, with iPad charged and necessary class materials.
- Cell Phones: Cell phones will be off and out of sight in the student's lockers or will be kept at the front office for pick-up by a parent.
- Attendance: Strive for 95, students will be to school on time and all day unless they are ill or have medical/dental appointments.
- Dress Code: Hoods will not be allowed to be worn in school.
- Communication: Concerns will always be heard at school. These concerns should be communicated in a calm and appropriate manner. Yelling at teacher or school staff, name calling, or using inappropriate language will not be allowed coming from students or parents.
Student Role
- Attend school regularly and on-time, we will follow attendance procedures outlined in our Strive for 95 Initiative
- Remain in class bell to bell unless you have permission to leave
- Be engaged in your learning, put your best effort forward
- Follow dress code
- Come to class prepared and ready to learn.
- Use the school issued iPad as the teacher instructs
- Turn off cell phones during the school day, keep your cell phones in your locker
- Be accountable for your learning, grades, assignments and attendance
- Ask questions
- Treat everyone with respect and kindness
Parent Role
- Set clear boundaries with electronics
- Know school policies and be supportive of the structures in place to guide learning
- If you need to reach your student, call the main line, as your student won't have their phone on them during class
- Ensure your student gets enough sleep (8-10 hours nightly)
- Help your child finish work they weren't able to finish in class
- Be sure your student gets to school on time and is prepared
- Communicate with teacher if a concern or issue arises. It is always good to partner with your student’s teachers and keep communication open and KIND
- Set academic and attendance goals/expectations with your student(s)
- Have an agreed upon consequence if your student does not comply with expectations of school or home
- Be off your cell phone at pick-up or drop-off
- Call the school if your child will not be attending school
- Follow visitor check in process when visiting the school
- Volunteer when you are able
- Treat everyone with respect and kindness
School Staff Role
- Take accurate and timely attendance
- Post learning targets in the classroom
- Teach classroom expectations in a clear and consistent way
- Plan engaging, standards-based activities for bell to bell learning
- Monitor during transitions for safety
- Respond to emails/voicemails/Seesaw messages within 24 hours
- Monitor and uphold the building expectations
- Hold our staff and each other accountable for consistent procedures
- Provide professional development opportunities that support School Continuous Improvement Plan goals and Return to Learn ideals
- Minimize cell phone use for school purposes (Respond to emails, respond to Seesaw messages, post class pictures, have in case of emergencies, etc.)
- Celebrate our successes
- Treat everyone with respect and kindness
Why No Cell Phones
We have seen an increase in unwanted behavior as cell phones are being used more often at school and at home. We encourage you to look at how and how often your child is getting on technology of any kind, but especially a cell phone. Below is some research on the risks of over using cell phones
- Just having your phone in your possession can impair your learning
- Cellphones in classrooms contribute to failing grades: study
- Guiding students to develop a clear understanding of their cell phone use
- Mobile phones in the classroom: A helpful or harmful hindrance?
- Reading on a smartphone promotes overactivity in the prefrontal cortex and lowers reading comprehension, study finds
Additional Reasons
- Research shows having cell phones on your person or near you pulls student attention away from focus, decreasing cognitive function and can increase anxiety
- It distracts others when someone is looking at his/her phone
- Our focus in elementary school is building verbal communication skills
- Students are videoing students or teachers without their permission
- Recording in bathrooms has increased and is illegal putting our students at risk
- Allowing cell phones in schools is giving students the ability to take their attention elsewhere
