FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

Greetings, Silver Lake Elementary Family!

It is with great excitement that I write this letter of introduction as the newly appointed Assistant Principal of Silver Lake Elementary. I am honored and proud to join your school community!

I have been an educator for the past 26 years with international teaching experience from age 3 to college level. My educational background includes Master’s of Teaching Foreign Languages (English and French), the Doctoral studies at Seattle Pacific University, and National Board Teacher Certification. My past educational roles have been teacher of English, French, Russian, Literacy Coach, and Dean of Students at Mukilteo School District. I am a passionate educator who strives to develop deep relationships with students that last a lifetime. A journey together to help someone to succeed and to thrive in life brings me most joy. I have a dear set of core values of excellence and equity that are rooted in my family, in my culture, upbringing, and my professional past experiences. I believe that every student can achieve the highest of his/her potential. Equity is not just about access and opportunity, but also about getting people what they need to succeed and to thrive. Seeing students succeed and reach their dreams, become leaders, make their parents and teachers proud - all this fills my cup.

I have a blended family, my husband Jon and I have 6 children all together. We have lived in Mukilteo since 2001 when we moved to the US. Our two oldest daughters live in UK, north of England. One of them is a Cambridge University graduate. Our son Nikolay is in his second year of studying to become an electrical engineer, our daughter Lyubov is on her way to start her studies of psychology at Santa Cruz University this fall. We also have two school-age children Lev and Varvara who are students in Mukilteo School District: a freshman at Kamiak High School, and a fourth- grade student at Mukilteo elementary. Four of our children are competitive ballroom dancers. Nikolay and Lev have been part of Kamiak swim team, and Lyubov has been on Dulcineas dance team for four years of her high school. I enjoy spending time with my family, travelling, cooking, doing arts and crafts, exercising, and walking with our two dogs.

As I look forward to the 2022-2023 school year, I am excited to meet all of you, learning and growing with Silver Lake team! Everything we do will be done with the best interests of our students in mind. I strongly believe in developing the whole child and to do this, we will focus on academic growth for all students, and their emotional and social growth. Building relationships with students, staff, and families is one of the most important aspects of my work. You will see me at drop off and pick up, in the hallways, in classrooms, in the cafeteria, and at special events. I welcome your feedback and input. Please, also feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns, or celebrations throughout the year.

Let’s make it a great year! Irina Kourilenko (Ирина Николаевна Куриленко) aka Dr. K.

FROM THE COUNSELOR

Welcome Back, Mustangs!

I am Carrie Surowiec, the school counselor here at Silver Lake Elementary. This is my 5th year as the counselor! I love this school, the kids, and the families and am so happy to be back!

At Silver Lake in the month of September, we work hard to ensure that students know the four schoolwide expectations—Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe, and Be Kind. We teach them what this looks like, what is expected, and practice the skills together in different areas of the school. Make sure to ask your students what expected behavior looks like at school!

The second week of school, teachers will begin our social-emotional learning curriculum called Second Step. These lessons help students manage emotions, relationships, and conflicts. They are research-based and provided at all elementary and middle schools in our district. The first unit is on Skills for Learning where they will learn and practice listening, focusing, following directions, and self-talk for staying on task. You can follow along and practice at home by visiting this website: www.secondstep.org Below are the Activation keys you will need to log in. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.
