Summer Math Challenge
For the past three years, the Summer Math Challenge has been something we did at Glenwood to help students engage in math related thinking over the summer months. The challenge is very simple and includes a variety of ways to meet the challenge - by playing games using cards or dice, playing board games, number puzzles, online games, reading counting books, counting objects or any other activity that gets our math brains working - at least 20 times over the summer. Parents just need to initial the date on the Summer Math Challenge Calendar.
New this year, Edgewood Elementary has challenged us to see which school can get more students to complete the challenge! It's their first time doing the challenge so Glenwood has an advantage. In fall, return the initialed calendar to your teacher. We will have a simple celebration for those who've completed the challenge! We'll announce the winning school in September.
Most of all, this should be a fun time doing things we maybe never even realized were mathematical. The website below supports the Summer Math Challenge but it is NOT necessary to have a computer to participate. This site is also accessible on each elementary building's web page under Learning Resources. Most of all, have fun!
K4 and Grade 2 Farm Fair
The K4 and 2nd Grade students hosted the FARM AND FRIENDS FAIR this week. The K4 scientists and researchers wondered, questioned, and learned about farm animals. Their second grade “coaches” helped them by becoming their reading experts, guiding them with the reading and writing process.
After learning about their animals from books, pictures, and videos the students planned how to share their learning with others. They chose the most important features of their animals and created teaching posters with drawings, captions, and labels. They shared these posters at the FARM AND FRIENDS FAIR.
They continued their learning on a trip to Green Meadows Farm together on Friday. This collaboration is a true example of the Wildcat Way. Please check out a few pictures below of the collaborative effort!
