Mapping My Reading World 2018-2019
Because READERS are EXPLORERS!
Reading Through the Genres Challenge!
Second graders through Fifth graders will participate in our Read Through the Genres Challenge for the 5th year. We've customized the reading challenge to accommodate each grade level. Included in this digital flyer are general guidelines and tips for meeting the reading challenge as well as specifics for each grade.
Mapping My Reading World in Second Grade
Second Graders will be introduced to the each of the genres both in class and in the library. They will read books on their reading level, reading three books in each genre to earn a genre tag. Students will log their books in their reading logs and record their AR scores as they complete each book and test on it. They must pass their AR test by 80% for the book to count. Teachers will check their folders each week and dispense genre tags to students in the classroom. Earning 2 tags per 9 weeks, students will come into the library for a genre tag celebration at the end of each 9 weeks.
Mapping My Reading World in 3rd Grade
Third Graders will read books on their reading level, reading three books in each genre to earn a genre tag. They must pass their AR test by 80% for the book to count. After logging their books in their reading folders, they will complete the Mapping My Reading World google form for their class by answering questions about each book. Teachers will use the google form to track their progress and give them their tags weekly. Links for each teacher are included below. Earning 2 genre tags per 9 weeks, students will be invited to the library for a genre celebration at the end of the 9 weeks. By the last 9 weeks, students must have earned all 9.
We are "Genre-fied"!
Use the chart and the links below to help identify genres with your students. Four years ago, we took the fiction books shelved in ABC orders off our shelves and we reshelved them by "genres." Our library is "genre-fied"--color-coded with labels on books for easy and quick genre identification. Signs above the shelves identify the genre by color. How to find a specific genre is reinforced throughout the year in weekly library lessons. When your students search for a library book, they use color-coded shelves by the following genres: Realistic Fiction--Light Purple, Mystery--Red, Historical Fiction--Orange, Science Fiction--Yellow, Fantasy--Green, Traditional Literature--Brown, Nonfiction--Blue, Biography--Gray, and Poetry--Pink.
