Upcoming Biology Sessions
Region 7 Education Service Center
June 1 - Biology Category 1: Structure & Function
For category 1 in biology, students have to demonstrate an understanding of biomolecules as building blocks of cells, and that cells are the basic unit of structure and function of living things. The study of structure and function is not only massive but can be overwhelming. What vocabulary words do you address? How deep do you go? What are activities that address the standards? These are a few of the questions we will address in this session.
June 6 - Biology Category 2: Mechanisms of Genetics
In category 2 of the biology standards, students have to demonstrate an understanding of the mechanisms of genetics. This is no easy task. In this session, we will explore what that looks like in the classroom as we analyze the data from the released tests.
June 20 - Biology Category 3: Biological Evolution & Classification
Category 3 of the biology TEKS asks that students demonstrate an understanding of the theory of biological evolution and the hierarchical classification of organisms. In this session, we will breakdown the TEKS and look at data from the released tests. Teachers will also engage in activities that address those standards and promote critical thinking.
June 23 - Biology Category 4: Biological Processes & Systems
For category 4, students demonstrate an understanding of metabolic processes, energy conversions, and interactions and functions of systems in organisms. This can be a difficult concept for not only students but teachers as well. In this session, participants will learn ways to build on prior knowledge while confronting misconceptions.
June 29 - Biology Category 5: Interdependence within Environmental Systems
For category 5 in the biology TEKS, students demonstrate an understanding of the interdependence and interactions that occur within an environmental system and their significance. This is no easy task. In this session, we will explore what that looks like in the classroom as we analyze the data from the released tests.
