Orana Catholic Primary School
Term 2 Week 3
TO GIVE IS TO RECEIVE
Our community values an attitude of enthusiastically applying energy and effort to become better learners. Excellence is evident when:
• we do our best to develop our talents and share them with others
• we have high expectations of what we can achieve
• we take risks and experiment with the way we learn
• we work hard to do our best work
• we celebrate our achievements
A Prayer for Respect
Dear God,
We thank you for each day,
Please help us to respect and tolerate everyone, including those that are different to us.
Help us to be kind and patient with one another and always show respect.
No matter what race, age, gender or religion people are, help us to be fair and kind to them.
Help us to cooperate, be helpful and listen.
Protect all of us and help us to make our school and the world a better place.
Amen
Dear Parents and Carer,
I hope all mothers, grandmother’s and mother figures in our community had a happy Mothers’ Day where their love, commitment and dedication were acknowledged and celebrated by their families. Our parents and carers do many selfless things for us in our lives and at today’s junior assembly, students were asked to focus on ways that they could demonstrate appreciation for what their parents and carers do for them on a more regular basis. Ask your child how they plan to do this. It was wonderful to be able to once again gather together for assembly today to celebrate our honour award winners.
Students have settled into the winter uniforms smoothly and are generally wearing their uniforms correctly. The uniform policy can be found in the parent handbook, uniforms. Congratulations to all families for ensuring that students are attending school feeling proud of themselves and ready to demonstrate the school value “Respect” and "Excellence". Pride is a crucial part of a positive culture and people who are proud of something perform better in that environment and are likely to participate in and promote the positive culture. Students can show that they are proud of their school by wearing uniforms correctly, being welcoming, respectful and caring towards each other and giving their personal best to show excellence. Students can also determine whether their teachers and parents are proud of their school and this reinforces their willingness to do well.
Well done to the Year 3 and 5 students who have participated in NAPLAN testing this week. Catch up sessions will be conducted next week for students who have been absent this week.
The Automatic Gate is now partially in use. There are some connectivity issues to address. If you attend school during the school day, please press the button. At this stage, the audio is not working; however a visual shows in the office. If for some reason the gate is not opened, please call the school office or OSHC (both numbers are on the panel). The gate will close behind you. To exit, drive up close to the gate and it will open.
Last night, the Advisory Council met in person for the first time this year. We thank these members of our parent leadership group. The members saw a preview of the virtual tour and presentation on how we can utilise this for our community and beyond. More information will be coming soon.
Our P and F President Borhan Milani has regrettably resigned from this position due to work commitments. We thank Borhan for his contribution to our community this year and wish him well in his current endeavours. Please join us for our first P and F meeting in the Hall next Tuesday, at 6.30pm. If you wish to join the P and F Executive Committee please email your nomination to admin@orana.wa.edu.au by 4pm on Monday 16th May.
This Saturday night, we look forward to celebrating the Eucharist together at the Junior Community Mass. This will also be the Commitment Mass for the Year 4 students who will receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion for the first time. Please join us at 5.30pm at the Church.
Kindy interviews for 2023 commenced last term. If you would like your child to be considered for a place in Kindergarten for next year and have not yet put in an application form in, you will need to do so as soon as possible.
The latest Term 2 calendar can be found on our website. https://www.orana.wa.edu.au/calendar/
Any changes or updates will be added to the Events Calendar also on our website.
Take care and God bless,

COVID-19 Update
As a school we are continuing to navigate the ever changing COVID-19 protocols. WA Health has announced new baseline health measures. WA Health announced that schools are no longer required to issue correspondence to parents and carers; however, while case numbers remain high, we will provide responses to the self-reporting portal entries and a case summary in the newsletter. Health and hygiene promotion and enhanced cleaning regimes remain in place. For now, some risk minimisation strategies remain in place which are over and above the government measures for the safety of our community.
WA Health will provides information directly to the Covid-19 positive person / caregiver following their registration of a Covid-19 positive test result with WA Health via this Link. Parents and carers are encouraged to continue their reporting of close contact or Covid-19 positive status to schools through the Covid-19 self-reporting portal via this link. Please do not underestimate the importance of informing the school of a positive Covid-19 case / Close Contact status. Your actions will ensure the risk to others is minimised and that we do our very best to limit the spread of the virus across our community.
Further information on school operating guidelines for the new baseline settings is available on the school website.
Week 3 (7th - 13th May)
There were 32 cases reported to the school this week.
The positive cases are in isolation, as per WA Health requirements. Please carefully monitor for symptoms and seek testing if symptoms develop. Please keep your children at home if they are unwell.
NAPLAN Catch Up 19th - 22nd May
- Tuesday, 19th May 9am - Year 3/5 Writing
- Wednesday, 20th May 9am - Year 3/5 Reading
- Thursday, 21st May 9am - Year 3/5 Conventions of Language
- Friday, 22nd May 9am - Year 3/5 Numeracy
NAPLAN is a nationwide measure through which parents, teachers, schools, education authorities, governments and the broader community can determine how well young Australians are developing the literacy and numeracy skills that provide the critical foundation for other learning and for their productive and rewarding participation in the community.
• NAPLAN tests are one aspect of each school’s assessment and reporting process. NAPLAN does not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student’s performance. A child’s teacher will have the best insight into the child’s educational progress. NAPLAN results do not measure overall school quality.
• NAPLAN questions are directly linked to the Australian Curriculum: English and Mathematics. As such, the best preparation students can do for NAPLAN is to learn what they do in the classroom every day. On its own, NAPLAN is not a test that can be studied for, and students are not expected to do so.
• The assessments allow parents to see how their child is progressing against national standards in literacy and numeracy and over time. Along with other school assessment reports, NAPLAN supports parents in discussing with teachers their child’s strengths and areas for improvement.
• NAPLAN results can assist teachers by providing additional information to support their professional judgement about students’ levels of literacy and numeracy attainment and progress.
• NAPLAN can support school improvement by enabling teachers to monitor their students’ progress over time against the national measure, to identify strengths and areas to improve in teaching programs, and to set goals in literacy and numeracy.
Faith in Action
Junior Community and First Communion Commitment Mass
Now that restrictions are lifting, we will be celebrating our first Junior Community Mass for the year. This will be celebrated this Saturday, 14th May at 5.30pm. We welcome families from Pre-Kindy to Year 4 as this is also the night that our Year 4 First Communicants make their commitment to prepare for the Sacrament of Eucharist. Our junior choir will be invited to sing. We will also present our latest 'Faith in Action' Awards. These are awarded to students who make Jesus real in their actions.
May is traditionally devoted to Mary, our Mother. This Christian custom of dedicating the month of May to the Blessed Virgin arose at the end of the 13th century. The practice of honouring Mary during the month of May has been especially recommended by the Popes. The Blessed Virgin Mary is the Mother of the Church and therefore the example, as well as the guide and inspiration, of everyone who, in and through the Church, seeks to be the servant of God.

SOCIAL WORKER NEWS
ACCEPETING DIFFERENCE
Young children tend to accept difference in others without question. They make friends with children from a range of different backgrounds or abilities or from a range of different types of families.
As children get older, they learn to value difference from their parents. Your attitudes towards cultural and other differences will have a big impact on the way your growing children treat others who are different to them.
Reflect on your own acceptance of difference. How tolerant are you of the points of view of other people? How patient and flexible are you in accommodating different customs, beliefs, and cultural traditions? How much do you respect and value individuality? How do you talk about and describe others who are different from you?
Accepting difference means understanding how we are alike, how we are different and treating everyone with respect and understanding regardless of the differences.
Kind regards
Kath Warburton
