Types of Mining and Fracking

By Maggie McCarter & Taylor Andrews

Subsurface & Surface Mining

Subsurface- rock being mined from below the surface of the Earth/ underground

surface- rock being mined from the surface of the Earth/ above ground

Differences:

In subsurface rocks are being taken from under the ground, but in surface rocks are taken from above ground. Also the surface is safer and easier, the subsurface is very dangerous, hard, and costs more.

Sub-surface, Surface, Fracking

Sub-surface

effects on environment-

not as much damage to ecosystems

Examples-

Quarrying

Solution mining

Long wall mining

Shaft mining

description-

involves digging underground tunnels into the surface for buried rock.

Surface

effects on environment-

does more harm to the ecosystem and creates more of a mess

examples-

Strip mining
Open pit mining

Mountaintop removal mining

description-

rock and soil on the surface of the Earth are removed.

Fracking

Description-

drilling into the earth into a high pressure water mixture to release gas inside.

process-

Sand, Water and chemicals are put into the Earth with lots of pressure to let the gas go out of the well.

fun fact-

500,00 plus natural gas wells in the US

effects on environment-

air pollution

methane

waste
