October 14, 2016

It’s hard to believe that the first quarter is done and in the books already! It seems like we were just hosting enrollment and our Back to School Night a couple of weeks ago! We hope everyone has a fantastic weekend!

Winter Sports

I can’t believe we’re getting ready to use the term “winter” already, but the start of winter sports is right around the corner!

  • 8th Grade Girls Interscholastic Basketball Tryouts - Oct 20-21, 3-5pm at Barry Middle School

    • Interested girls should attend a meeting with the coach on Mon, Oct 17 at 7:15am in the Forum Rm, where she will get an informational flyer.

  • 8th Grade Boys Basketball Open Gym - Oct 20-21, 3-5pm at PCMS

  • 7th/8th Grade Wrestling Season Begins - Oct 20, 3-5pm at PCMS (See Informational Flyer)

  • 8th Grade Boys Interscholastic Basketball Tryouts - Oct 25-26, 3-5pm at PCMS (More information coming soon!)

*As with any school sport, students must have a current physical on file in the office before participating.

Last Call for School Pictures!

Just a quick reminder that Lifetouch will be in the building for the final picture re-take of the year next week Tues, Oct 18th. If your student has not been photographed by Lifetouch at all this year, please urge them to get their picture taken for an ID card and the yearbook. No purchase is required, but we do need to make sure every student has gotten photographed at least once this school year.

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Conferences are right around the corner! They are scheduled for Mon, Oct 24 from 3:30-7:30pm and Thurs, Oct 27 from 3:30-7pm, and will be held in the cafeteria and gym. (There are no sign ups. Just stop in at your convenience between the hours noted.)

7th Grade Field Trip Money Due

The deadline for Zoo field trip money was today, but we do still have quite a few students who have not turned in their form and/or money. We definitely want every one of our 7th graders to be a part of this field trip, so we will gladly still take their forms and money. However, please send them with your student Monday, if at all possible. (Please do not hesitate to mark “Financial Aid Needed” if money is an issue, and a big thank you to all who have donated extra $ to make this possible!)

Middle School Fun!

STUCO Movie Night - Oct 21, 3 - 5pm

Some more Friday night fun is coming our way Oct 21 when STUCO presents their monthly Movie Night! This month’s movie is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. As always, admission is free and concessions will be available for purchase. (Please encourage your student not to leave school property if they wish to attend, as they will not be admitted into Movie Night after 3pm.)

SKYZONE Kansas City is having a Platte City Middle School FUNdraiser Night!

  • November 2 anytime between 4:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m.
  • A percentage of the proceeds will go back to our school!
  • Walk-ins are welcome (be sure to mention Platte City Middle School) OR.......
  • You can secure a jump time on the web-site www.skyzone.com/kansascity to pre-purchase your tickets. Be sure to select the PCMS 60 minute button when ordering on-line. 60 minutes is $13.99, 90 minutes $17.99 or 120 minutes $21.99.
  • There will also be a concessions special for our students... only $4.00 for a slice of pizza, chips and water. All profit from concessions supports our school, too!

Parents, if 6495 Quivira Road, Suite A, Shawnee, KS 66216 is too far for you to drive, but your child still wants to participate, you are in luck! The school district has kindly offered an activity bus free of charge. The bus will leave the middle school at 2:30 and return back around 6:30-7:00 p.m.*

*We need to know roughly how many students will be attending this Nov. 2 event and how many students might be riding the activity bus, so please click here and fill out the short survey.

'Blue Lunch Special' Coming to PCMS

Starting next week, the Platte County School District is starting a new effort to encourage stronger relationships between police officers and students. The "Blue Lunch Special" allows Platte City Police Department officers to drop by any PCR-3 school to eat lunch with students. The idea behind the program is to promote open communication between students, staff, and police officers, develop relationships, show appreciation to our law enforcement, and increase police visibility across our campus. It also serves as a way to expose students to another career field. All of us at PCMS are really excited about this partnership!
