PRE-K 4 NEWS!

JUAN DIEGO ACADEMY AUGUST 31, 2015

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Dear Parents,

Thank you so much for coming to deliver your supplies and for showing us you are on board with our total Spanish Immersion program. Your children seemed eager to begin and we look forward to a great year! Your teachers are: Sra. Farias, Sra. Raquel and Sra. Puryear. Sra. Puryear was not in today but will be here tomorrow. Taylor, our Extended Care teacher, will be at school at 6:30. Please do not come to deliver your children earlier than 6:30. You may have to wait in your car.

We are beginning with Extended care on Tuesday at 6:30 a.m. Pre-K students(3 and 4's) will be having extended care in the Pre-K 4 room. Breakfast will be at 8:30 so children will not be eating in our Pre-K 4 room. We will be going up to the cafeteria at 8:30 to eat.

If you are dropping off your student for early morning extended care, the school building outside front doors will be unlocked. However, you must buzz for entering by the second set of inside doors. Taylor, our extended care caregiver will come to the door and let you in. You must sign your child in on his or her clipboard!! Don't forget please! Also there will be another sign-in sheet for EXTENDED CARE. This is for billing purposes.

Older siblings will have extended care in a different room in the building with Ian, our caregiver.

If you are arriving with your child between 7:45 and 8:00 a.m., remember to follow the path around the cul-de-sac in front of the building and keep driving around until you stop on the street in front of the building. Teachers will come out with clipboards for you to sign-in your child and then we will take your child into the classroom and you drive off so the next car can drive up. Same procedure will occur for the afternoon dismissal between 2:45-3:00.

Rainy days will work the same way except that your older sibling can come in the front doors and leave at the end of the day with their Pre-K brother or sister. I will use an umbrella to take your child out to the car so you can sign them out!

If you would like to come inside in the morning, please park your car in the back of the school by the walls facing the freeway. You may then walk your child between the Nun's house and the school on the left of the school building till you get to the front doors. We do not want Pre-K students coming into the building by the back door.

We ask for your patience at the start of this carpool experience. It does work if we are patient and follow the path as each child is signed in and taken from their cars. Today our carpool was not very successful due to parents parking and coming in to leave their children. There will be an adjustment period so please bear with us.

Our first day went off with very few things to mention but here it goes:

1. Please send water in the water bottles from home. They take them home each day and you refill them please.

2. Boys that are not wearing elastic waistband pants are having difficulty getting to the bathroom on time. We are not allowed to go into the boys bathroom and help them take off their pants.

3. After hanging up backpacks and taking out their lunchboxes and separate breakfast snack, they need to go wash their hands with soap and water. I am bringing small soap pump dispensers because they cannot reach the ones above the sinks. There are lots of hand washing times during the day.

3. WE HAVE A SEVERE PEANUT, DAIRY,AND SHELLFISH ALLERGIC CHILD. WE NEED TO BE CAUTIOUS ABOUT HER ALLERGIC REACTIONS TO CERTAIN FOODS. FYI: BIRTHDAY TREATS NEED TO BE DISCUSSED WITH TEACHERS BEFORE SENDING ANYTHING.

NAP: Children may bring a small blanket and a small stuffed toy for napping. It must fit in plastic trash bag that is kept in their cubbie. Please send it in the bag. It will be sent home on Fridays for you to launder. Teachers will be laundering fitted sheets that are for cots over the weekends.

Snacks for Morning breakfast from home: Try and place them in a separate paper sack or zip-lock so your child knows that they will be eating that particular food as a snack. Milk and Juice can always be purchased for breakfast if you are bringing breakfast snack from home or you can send your own drink.

Lunches: If we ever see candy in the lunchboxes, it will be placed back in their backpacks. Let's keep it a healthy lunch. No fast food can come in for lunch.

Homework: We will not be starting homework for a few weeks. They will be taking the blue folder home with homework everyday and they will return it everyday in their backpacks for us to refill.

Recess: We are working on playground rules. Please speak to your child about the following rules:

1. Do not play with rocks, throw them, cover yourself with them or

place them in your pockets to bring them into the classroom.

2. Do not climb up the slide. Slide only on your bottoms. Do not throw rocks down the slide.

3. Do not push anyone off the big toy!

4. If someone is bothering you, tell the teacher.

5. Do not hit anyone or hurt anyone with your words.

Family and individual photos: Please do not forget to send in a picture of your family that we can keep all year in our classroom. Also, please send an individual picture of your child.

Family Survey form is so important! That is going to be parent's homework on the first day of school. If you can also go over the Pre-K handbook and sign -off that you read it and send in that form, it would be greatly appreciated. I need that form that says you read the whole handbook for their files. (Washington Licensing Regulation) PLEASE RETURN THE FOLDER WITH FORMS YOU WERE ASKED TO FILL OUT. THANK YOU!

VOLUNTEERS WILL NOT START UNTIL OCTOBER. PLEASE BE SURE AND SIGN-UP FOR SAFE ENVIRONMENT CLASS IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO VOLUNTEER. YOU HAVE A MONTH TO FULFILL THIS REQUIREMENT. PLEASE CHECK THE ARCHDIOCESE OF SEATTLE WEBSITE FOR MORE INFORMATION. JUST SEARCH FOR SAFE ENVIRONMENT CLASSES IN THE AREA. SOME CLASSES ARE HELD AT SCHOOLS OR CHURCHES CLOSE BY.

Today we learned some routines that helped the children follow directions in Spanish. It was really fun to see how attentive they were with finger plays, songs, rules and line-up.

We counted to 30 in Spanish, learned about the calendar and worked on playground behavior. Our clean-up song in Spanish was very effective. They did an excellent job today!

I will post some pictures of the first day of school after I receive everyone's e-mails on the Parent Survey.

That is all for today. Sra. Raquel will write another newsletter later on this week.

See you all tomorrow! Sincerely, Sra. Farias
