Labour Update- School Closure Friday February 21st
The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario(ETFO), which represents elementary teachers within our board, and the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF), which represents secondary teachers and professional student service personnel within our board, gave notice that their members will be participating in a one-day, province-wide strike on Friday, February 21 if no progress is made at the central bargaining table.
At that time, classes for ALL LDSB students will be cancelled on Friday, February, 21. Classes will resume as planned on Monday, February 24.
Please make alternative child care arrangements and do not send your child to school on Friday, February 21. For more information please go to the LDSB website.
Student Census 2020
School boards across the province are asking students to complete a student census to identify and eliminate discrimination and bias from schools and classrooms. Students in the Limestone students in Grades 4 to 12 will participate in our confidential student census in the spring of 2020.
The online census, which will be completed by students during supervised class time, will ask students a variety of questions around their identity and demographics. All information on individual students will remain confidential. Below you will find a video and link for more information about the student census.
TERM ONE REPORT CARDS
As shared earlier by the Limestone District School Board, Term 1 report cards for elementary students across the province will not be issued due to the ongoing provincial labour disruption by members of ETFO.
We know families are disappointed with the absence of mid-year report cards which are normally scheduled for February. Teachers are continuing to evaluate and assess students but will not be entering marks and/or learning skills electronically. It is important to remember that report cards are not the sole record of achievement data for your child. Ongoing and regular communication between teachers and families occurs throughout the year. As always, parents and guardians can contact their child’s teacher to discuss their progress, or concerns.
It was a difficult decision not to issue term-one report cards; however, during job action it is not business as usual in our schools. Although elementary teachers have submitted marks to administrators, school administrators will not be communicating marks to families.
The production of report cards for Limestone’s 13,000 elementary students relies on the electronic inputting of assessment data by teachers. This translates into about 300,000 individual pieces of data. Our principals and vice-principals cannot do the work of more than 800 classroom teachers. Nor can this work be outsourced to other Board staff, or external agencies due to the significant unbudgeted cost, and concerns about accuracy and, more importantly, privacy given the confidential information that is part of a child’s report card.
We thank you for your ongoing patience and understanding during this time of labour action. We are hopeful that the parties at the central table are able to reach an agreement soon. The Board will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
STUDENT SUCCESS: Picking up early or dropping off late. When done as a habit, or it becomes a routine....it matters
